French man sets new world record for nonstop solo sailing around the world   
       
Frenchman Francois Gabart smashed the world record for the fastest non-stop solo navigation of the globe, completing the mammoth feat in 42 days, 16 hours, 40 minutes and 35 seconds. The 34-year-old sailor crossed a virtual finish line drawn between the island of Ushant off France's northwest tip and Lizard Point in southwest England at 0145 GMT, comfortably beating the previous record set by compatriot Thomas Coville last year by six days and 10 hours.

Enforcement Directorate freezes assets in STC Case        

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has frozen assets worth Rs 245 crore in connection with its money laundering probe in the alleged fraud of Rs 2,200 crore with the State Trading Corporation (STC). The agency had early this year registered a criminal case under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) against Ms Global Steel Holding Limited, its chairman Pramod Kumar Mittal and others based on an FIR by the CBI.

UIDAI suspends E KYC verification by Airtel Payment Bank       
 
The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has temporarily barred Bharti Airtel and Airtel Payments Bank from conducting Aadhaar-based SIM verification of mobile customers using eKYC process.  The action follows allegations of Bharti Airtel using the Aadhaar-eKYC based SIM verification process to open payments bank accounts of its subscribers without their informed consent. More than 23 lakh customers have reportedly received as many as Rs. 47 cr in their Airtel bank accounts, which they did not know had been opened.          
Airtel Payments Bank is the first entity to get the final licence from Reserve Bank of India for launching a Payments Bank.        
Shashi Arora is the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Airtel Payments Bank.

Retail Inflation goes up to 4.88% in November 2017        
   
Retail inflation has risen to 4.88 % in November this year on account of costlier fuel, vegetables and eggs. According to the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation, the inflation, based on Consumer Price Index (CPI), was at 3.58 percent in October. It was 3.63 percent in November last year. Inflation in eggs shot to 7.95 percent in November on annual basis, as against 0.69 percent in the previous month. In the fuel and light segment, it was 7.92 percent, as against 6.36 in October. For vegetables, it was 22.48 percent in November. The inflation in the segment was only 7.47 percent in October.

P.V. Sindhu loses in Dubai World Super Series Badminton Final        
   
On 17th December 2017, Olympic silver medalist P V Sindhu has finished as runner-up at the Dubai World Super Series Badminton Final. In an energy-sapping summit clash in Dubai, she lost to World No. 2 Akane Yamaguchi of Japan in three games 21-15, 12-21, 19-21. The match lasted an hour and 31 minutes. It was Sindhu's third loss in a major final, following her narrow defeats at the Rio Olympics and Glasgow World Championship.

Meghalaya launches India’s first social audit law    

Meghalaya became the first state in the country to launch a social audit law. The state passed the Community participation and Public Services Social Audit Act, 2017. This law integrates social audit of government programmes and schemes. This brings about not only a facilitating factor to correct schemes but also empowers the people with a say in how the money should be spent. The law will be applicable to 11 departments and 21 schemes administered by the Meghalaya Government.

Dubai opens world’s first hospital for camel 

Last week, the world’s first hospital for camels was opened in Dubai. Built at a cost of $10.9 million, the hospital has state of the art facilities to treat camels. The Dubai Camel Hospital has a team of international veterinary doctors and can treat 20 camels at a time. The hospital will also do research and development of medicines for camels.


NASA sights eighth planet Kepler- 90i in the solar system         
  
Scientists at NASA have announced that they have spotted an eighth planet in the solar system. They have named it Kepler-90i. This was announced by NASA on the 14th December 2017. Kepler 90i is the eighth planet discovered in the Kelper 90 system. This is about 2545 light years from earth. So far, scientists have confirmed about 2500 exoplanets, out of which 30 are Earth-like planets where liquid water could exist.

Nepal hosts first International Wheelchair Cricket Tournament  

On 14th December 2017, Kathmandu in Nepal hosted the world’s first ever Wheelchair Cricket tournament. Teams from Nepal, India and Bangladesh participated in the tournament.
