Orissa signs MOU with Singapore based Education Services for Skill Development           

Odisha Skill Development Authority (OSDA) and Singapore-based ITE Education Services (ITEES) signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) for skill development in the State. ITEES is a subsidiary of Singapore’s prestigious Institute of Technical Education (ITE). 100 ITI teachers will be trained at Singapore at the ITE in 2018 as per the provision of the MoU.

 Uttar Pradesh to have India’s first Blackbuck Conservation Reserve   

Uttar Pradesh cabinet decided to make India's first conservation reserve for blackbuck in Allahabad's Meja. The decision taken for the protection of black deer will also help in wooing tourists. In addition to this, the other decisions taken by the UP cabinet includes developing eco-tourism in nearly two dozen places in the state.

Mumbai’s Royal Opera House gets UNESCO Heritage Award  
   
Almost a year after it reopened, The Royal Opera House has been awarded the UNESCO Asia-Pacific Award for Cultural Heritage Conservation. The building was closed to the public in 1993 and sat crumbling for years before a restoration project was undertaken eight years ago to replicate the heritage structure. It was originally inaugurated by Britain’s King George V in 1911 and completed in 1916.

World Food India 2017 inaugurated in New Delhi    

Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the most anticipated International Mega Food event- World Food India 2017, the biggest congregation of global investors and business leaders of major food companies. The event is organised by the Food Processing Industries Ministry in Delhi. The three-day event aims to transform food economy and realise the vision of doubling of farmers' income by establishing India as a preferred investment destination and sourcing hub for the global food processing industry.         
  • This is the first time that India is hosting such an event for the food processing sector. 
  •  Harsimrat Kaur Badal is the Minister of Food Processing Industries.

 World’s highest motorable road constructed in Ladakh    

Border Roads Organisation coming under the Defence Ministry has constructed the world’s highest motorable road at 19300 feet above mean sea level in Ladakh in Jammu and Kashmir. The road passes through Umlingla Top at a height of 19300 feet. It is 86 km long and connects Chismule and Denchok villages in Leh. This road has been constructed under the Project Himank, which was started in 1985 to construct roads and maintain related infrastructure in the Leh- Ladakh region.

All four-wheelers sold after Dec 1, 2017, to be registered only if fitted with FASTags

On 2nd Nov 2017, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways informed that all four wheelers sold in the country after Dec 1, 2017, will be registered only if they are fitted with FASTags. Necessary amendments have been made to the Central Motor Vehicles Rules in this regard and a Gazette Notification has been issued.


Forbes’ Top 100 Most Powerful Women in the World List Released   
   
Five Indian women led by ICICI Bank chief executive officer (CEO) and managing director (MD) Chanda Kochhar and including Bollywood star Priyanka Chopra, have featured on the list of the world’s 100 most powerful women compiled by Forbes. The list was topped by German Chancellor Angela Merkel. Kochhar was ranked 32, while HCL Corp. CEO Roshni Nadar Malhotra took the 57th position. Priyanka Chopra was at 97.            
The Top 5 Women in the List are-   
1. Chancellor of Germany- Angela Merkel 
2. UK Prime Minister- Theresa May
3. Co-chair of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation- Melinda Gates     
4. Facebook chief operating officer (COO)- Sheryl Sandberg        
5. General Motors CEO- Mary Barra.          
  • Angela Merkel retained the top spot for the seventh consecutive year and 12 times in total.
  •   The 2017 ‘World’s 100 Most Powerful Women’ identifies a “new generation of icons, game-changers and gate crashers who are boldly scaling new heights and transforming the world”.

World’s Third Largest Book fair opens in Sharjah  

With more than 1.5 million book titles and 1,650 publishing houses from 60 countries, Sharjah International Book Fair (SIBF) opened its doors to public and trade visitors. It is the third largest book fair in the world.  The book fair was held under the theme ‘A World in My Book’. The event has been organised by Sharjah Book Authority (SBA). Sharjah also inaugurated Sharjah Publishing City (SPC) which is the world’s first specialised book publishing free zone.   
  •  Sharjah is a city in the UAE.
  •  United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) has recently announced Sharjah as the ‘World Book Capital 2019’.        
India Post Payment Banks to be operational in all 650 districts of the country by April 2018 

The government has said India Post Payments Bank will become operational in all 650 districts of the country by April next year. They will facilitate financial inclusion. In reply to a question, Minister of Communications Manoj Sinha said in New Delhi that these banks will be linked to 1.55 lakh rural post offices and carry out banking services. The Minister said, two such banks are already operational in Ranchi and Raipur.

ONGC Gets Government Approval for acquiring Hindustan Petroleum

On 1st Nov 2017, the Union Government gave the approval for ONGC to acquire majority 51 % share in Hindustan Petroleum. The deal is valued at Rs. 25000 to Rs. 30000 Cr. It is expected that the deal will be completed before the end of the financial year. CMD of ONGC is Shashi Shankar.



Krishna Sobti wins prestigious Jnanpith Award 2017    
    
Eminent Hindi Litterateur Krishna Sobti has been awarded the 53rd Jnanpith Award for the year 2017 for her path-breaking contribution to Indian literature. Jnanpith is the highest literary award of the country. A press release issued by the Jnanpith said the language used by Sobti in her writings is influenced by the intermingling of Hindi, Urdu and Punjabi cultures where her characters are always bold and daring - ready to accept all challenges thrown by the society.

“Fake News” named the Word of the Year 2017      

After Brexit in 2016, the word “Fake News” has been named the Word of the Year 2017 by the Collins Dictionary. This was because there was a surge of 365% in the usage of the word Fake News in the past one year. Fake news has been defined as “false, often sensational information disseminated under the guise of news reporting”. The word was popularized by the US President Donald Trump.

Gagan Narang wins silver medal in Commonwealth Shooting Event    

Olympic bronze medalist Gagan Narang won a silver medal in the men’s 50m rifle prone event at the Commonwealth Shooting Championships in Gold Coast, Australia. Annu Raj Singh has also won the bronze medal in the women’s 50m pistol competition. London Olympics bronze medalist Narang, who is appearing in his first major tournament since the 2016 Rio Olympics, shot a total of 617.6 in the qualification to end fourth. Heena Sidhu clinched a gold medal in women’s 10m air pistol event.

Kidambi Srikanth achieves career-best No. 2 in World Rankings

India ace Kidambi Srikanth has grabbed a career-best ranking of World No. 2 after jumping two places in the latest BWF ranking. Srikanth, who reached five finals and clinched four titles this year so far, now has 73,403 points, 4527 points away from World Champion Viktor Axelsen of Denmark. In women’s singles, P V Sindhu, who also reached the semifinals at France, was static at World No. 2, while former World No. 1 Saina Nehwal was also steady at the 11th spot.

Prakash, Amanpreet, Jitu win medals in 50m pistol event at Commonwealth Shooting Championships     

Indian shooters Prakash Nanjappa, Amanpreet Singh and Jitu Rai made a clean sweep in the 50m pistol event at the Commonwealth Shooting Championships at Gold Coast in Australia on 3rd Nov 2017. Prakash won the coveted gold medal, Amanpreet the Silver and Jitu settled for bronze medals. Earlier, Olympic bronze-medalist Gagan Narang had won a silver, while Swapnil Suresh Kusale bagged the bronze in the men's 50m rifle prone event. In women's 25m pistol final, Anuraj Singh won the bronze. Earlier, Indian pistol shooters had also pulled off a clean sweep in the 10m air pistol event with Shahzar Rizvi winning Gold, Omkar Singh the Silver and Jitu Rai the bronze medals.
