N.J.Gangte appointed India’s next High Commissioner to Zambia         

N.J.Gangte has been appointed as the next High Commissioner of India to the Republic of Zambia. He is presently the Joint Secretary in the Ministry of External Affairs. He is expected to take up his assignment shortly. Lusaka is the Capital of the Republic of Zambia. Edgar Lungu is the president of the Republic of Zambia.




Sharmila Tagore Gets Life Time Achievement Award       
 
Veteran actor Sharmila Tagore has received the Lifetime Achievement Award. The 72-year-old actor was bestowed with the recognition by the PHD Chamber of Commerce and Industry in New Delhi for her contribution in the field of cinema. Minister of State for Prime Minister's Office Jitendra Singh and Delhi BJP chief Manoj Tiwari presented the award to Tagore. The celebrated actor debuted in movies with legendary director Satyajit Ray's Bengali film Apur Sansar in 1959. Her breakout role in Hindi cinema was Shakti Samanta's 1964 film Kashmir Ki Kali. She received the National Award for Best Actress for the film. The actor also received National Award for Best Supporting Actress for 2003 Bengali film, Abar Aranye.

Karnataka Signs MoU with Microsoft  

The Karnataka Government announced the signing of a MoU with Microsoft Corporation India Private Limited with an intention to empower smallholder farmers with technology-oriented solutions that will help them increase income. The MoU will experiment with Karnataka Agricultural Price Commission and Department of Agriculture to help improve price forecasting practices to benefit farmers.

  • Vajubhai Vala is the Governor of Karnataka.        
  • Satya Nadella is the CEO of Microsoft.

UP Declares Vrindavan and Barsana as Sacred Sites       

The Uttar Pradesh government issued an order notifying Vrindavan and Barsana towns in Mathura district as “pavitra teerth sthals (sacred pilgrimage sites)”. No meat and liquor shops will be allowed in these towns anymore. Principal Secretary (Religious Affairs) Avinish Kumar Awasthi instructed to prohibit meat and liquor shops in these notified areas. Vrindavan and Barsana are the first two places to be notified as teerth sthal in government records.

Union Cabinet approves Rs. 7000 cr for construction of 6 IITs    

The Union Cabinet has approved over Rs 7,000 crore for construction of permanent campuses of six new Indian Institute of Technology (IITs) across the country. Each of the permanent campuses to be established at Tirupati (Andhra Pradesh), Palakkad (Kerala), Dharwad (Karnataka), Jammu (Jammu and Kashmir), Bhilai (Chhattisgarh) and Goa will have a facility for housing 1,200 students from the academic year 2020-2021. Currently, these institutions are functioning from temporary campuses with a total strength of 1,530 students. IIT Kharagpur was the first in India to be established in 1951.

External Affairs Ministry launches “#Ask the Spokesperson” initiative

To enable the public to understand the foreign policies better, the External Affairs Ministry of the Central Govt has launched a new initiative “#Ask the spokesperson”. This was inaugurated on the 27th October 2017. The Ministry invites questions from the public on foreign affairs and foreign policies and select questions will be answered by the spokesperson of the External Affairs Ministry.


World’s First Hydrogen Trams begins service in China
    
The world’s first hybrid electric tram powered by hydrogen fuel cells has started running in China, marking a big step in the application of green energy in public transport. The tram was put into commercial operation for the first time in Tangshan, north China’s Hebei Province. With water being its only emission, the tram emits no pollutants. No nitrogen oxides will be produced as the temperature of the reaction inside hydrogen fuel cells is controlled under 100 degrees Celsius. The tram, having three carriages with 66 seats, can run for 40 kilometres at a maximum speed of 70 kilometres per hour after being refilled with 12 kilograms of hydrogen.

Catalonia declares Independence from Spain    
      
On 27th October 2017, Catalonia declared its independence from Spain, after the lawmakers in the region decided to do so. The parliament of Catalonia decided to so by a secret ballot taken on that day. Subsequently, the Spanish Government decided to dismiss the Catalonian Government and take control of the administration from Madrid. The top officials of the police in Catalonia also were suspended by the Spanish Government.

First ever Insurance Policy for persons already diagnosed with Cancer launched
   
Chennai based Star Health Insurance Co Ltd has launched the first-ever policy for persons diagnosed with Cancer in the country. It is called the “Star Cancer Gold”. The policy covers the risk of recurrence, the risk of spreading and the second occurrence of malignancy. There is two sum assured Rs 3 and Rs 5 Lacs.

Virat Kohli becomes fastest to reach 9000 ODI Runs   
      
Virat Kohli became the sixth Indian to complete 9000 ODI runs during the third game against New Zealand. He went on to score his 32nd ODI century off 96 balls. Mahendra Singh Dhoni had reached the milestone in 2016 while other Indians who have done so are Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid, Sourav Ganguly and Mohammad Azharuddin. Overall, Kohli, who played his 202nd match and 194th innings have become the 19th batsman to breach the 9000-run mark, making him the fastest to get there. Kohli had recently surpassed Australian great Ricky Ponting on the list of most ODI hundreds with his 31st ton. Kohli has broken de Villiers' record of the fastest cricketer to reach the milestone, with the South African batsman taking 205 innings.

Sangram Dahia wins silver in ISSF event     
  
Sangram Dahiya won a silver in the ISSF World Cup Final, in New Delhi. Double trap exponent Sangram clinched his first-ever senior medal in International Shooting Sports Federation tournament. He was taking part in the prestigious event for the first time. Jitu Rai and Heena Sidhu have won the gold in 10m mixed air pistol on the opening day. Amanpreet Singh clinched a bronze medal in the final of men's 50m pistol.

Kidambi Srikanth wins French Open Future Series Badminton Tournament 

Eighth-seeded Indian Kidambi Srikanth lifted the men's singles title of the French Open Superseries badminton in Paris on 28th October 2017. This is his fourth title in his fifth super series final. Srikanth beat Japan's Kenta Nishimoto 21-14, 21-13 in the final.  Srikanth had earlier won the Indonesian Open, Australian Open and Denmark Open tournaments this year.
