First ever Tri-Services Joint Exercise begins

The first-ever Tri-Services Joint Exercise between Indian and Russian Armed Forces, INDRA-2017 began near Vladivostok in Russia. Two indigenously built Indian Naval ships INS Satpura and INS Kadmatt reached Vladivostok Port and were given a traditional ceremonial welcome.  The Indian contingent for the Exercise is led by the Task Force Commander Major General ND Prasad. The Exercise INDRA in its previous nine editions has been conducted as a single service exercise alternately between the two countries.

Piped Natural Gas inaugurated in Bhubaneswar     

Petroleum Minister Dharmendra Pradhan has inaugurated the first phase of Piped Natural Gas supply system in Bhubaneswar, Odisha. In the first phase, 255 houses in Nalco Nagar in Chandrasekharpur of Bhubaneswar were supplied with environment-friendly PNG.  As part of the City Gas Distribution project, around 25 thousand households in twin-city Bhubaneswar and Cuttack would get PNG connection by the end of next year. The overall capital expenditure for the Bhubaneswar and Cuttack gas distribution projects will cost around Rs. 1700 crore.

Global Ayurveda Meet to be held in Kochi     

The Government will be organizing the Global Ayurveda Meet in Kochi in Feb 2018. This will include a four-day seminar as well. The Global Ayurveda Festival is being organized by the Centre for Innovation in Science and Social Action in association with the State Govt department of yoga and natural sciences.

Sec 247 of the Companies Act comes into force      

The Ministry of Corporate Affairs has intimated that w.e.f 18th October 2017, the Sec 247 of the Companies Act which deals with Valuation by Registered Valuers has come into effect. The Rules provide regulations for Registration of Valuers and to conduct valuation under the Companies Act, 2013. Individuals, partnership firms, and companies can act as valuers under the Companies Act after getting registered with an authority specified by the Govt.

Lebanon’s Parliament Approves the Country’s first Budget since 2005           

On 19th October 2017, Lebanon’s Parliament approved the country’s first budget in 12 years. Politicians had blocked this as well as the previous year’s budgets calling for an audit of the extra-budgetary spending in the previous years. The Budget was considered a necessity to bring the Lebanese Economy back on track which had been badly affected by the inaction of the previous Governments as well as the continuous war with the neighboring country of Syria.

World’s first floating wind farm starts generating Electricity        

The world’s floating wind farm in Scotland has started generating electricity, it has been announced officially. Work on this farm started in July 2017. The turbines used in this wind farm have been towed all the way from Norway for this purpose. It is expected that the floating wind farm will generate about 135 Gwh of power every year.

World’s oldest warship sets sailing again      

The world’s oldest commissioned warship “USS Constitution“ has set sailing again after 2014, when it was stopped for refurbishments. The ship sailed again on 20th October 2017. USS Constitution’s ride from the Charlestown Navy Yard in Boston to Fort Independence on Castle Island marks the 220th anniversary of its launch as well as the US Navy’s 242nd anniversary.
  
October 20- World Statistics Day          

At its 41st Session in February 2010, the United Nations Statistical Commission proposed celebrating 20th October 2010 as World Statistics Day. Acknowledging that the production of reliable, timely statistics and indicators of countries’ progress is indispensable for informed policy decisions and monitoring implementation of the Millennium Development Goals, the General Assembly adopted on 3rd June 2010, which officially designated 20 October 2010 as the first-ever World Statistics Day.

World Food Laureate Award 2017 announced    
     
Dr. Akinwumi Ayodeji Adesina has won the 2017 World Food Laureate Award. He was the former Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development of Nigeria. Dr. Adesina has been at the forefront of galvanizing political will to transform African Agriculture through initiatives to expand agricultural production, thwart corruption in the Nigerian fertilizer industry and increase the availability of credit for the small farmers in the region.
