The Staff Selection Commission released the SSC CGL Tier 1 results (Combine Graduate level) today. The Tier-I SSC CGL 2017 exam was conducted from 5th August to 23rd August 2017. 150404 candidates have qualified to attempt the Tier 2 and Tier 3 SSC CGL 2017 Exam. 

Note: Results of ten candidates with roll numbers 2201026842, 2201045468, 2201062554, 2201098871, 2201105924, 2201272135, 2201293503, 2201325697, 2402006180, 2402019194 have not been declared due to court orders.

Vice Admiral Ajit Kumar takes over as Vice Chief of Naval Staff  

Vice Admiral Ajit Kumar P, AVSM, VSM has taken over charge as the Vice Chief of Naval Staff (VCNS) from Vice Admiral Karambir Singh AVSM at a formal ceremony held in New Delhi. Vice Admiral Ajit Kumar P, AVSM, VSM is an alumnus of the National Defence Academy. The Flag Officer was commissioned in the Indian Navy on 01 Jul 81 and is a specialist in Missiles & Gunnery. Sunil Lanba is the present Chief of Naval Staff of Indian Navy.

L&T Hands over first Offshore private Patrol Vessel to Indian Coast Guard    

On 27th October 2017, L&T handed-over the first Private Offshore Patrol Vessel (OPV) Vikram to the Indian Coast Guard. The delivery has been done much ahead of the scheduled delivery date of March 2018. OPV Vikram is the first ever defense craft to be built in a private shipyard for the Indian Coast Guard.

AU Small Bank and SIDBI Launch Rs 200 Cr Fund for SMEs   
AU Small Finance Bank tied up with Small Industries Development Bank of India (SIDBI) to launch a Rs. 200 crores fund for providing loans to micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs).   The program will fund term loans in the Rs. 25 lakhs to Rs. 2 crore ticket size. Under the advice of Sidbi, AU Bank will play the anchor in this program as all the processes including disbursement, monitoring and recovery will be handled by them. The appraisal of the proposal shall be done jointly by AU Bank and SIDBI.

India to host UN Wildlife Summit in 2020    
On 28th October 2017, it was announced by the UN for Environment Programme that India would host the UN Wildlife Summit in the year 2020. India will host the 13th edition of the UN Global wildlife conference on migratory species in 2020. This conference is held once in three years. It is the only international treaty devoted to migratory species.

The book “Dreamnation: Uniting a country with handwritten Dreams” released       

The book “Dreamnation: Uniting a country with handwritten Dreams” was released by the Indian women’s cricket team captain Mythali Raj on 15th October 2017, the 86th birth anniversary of the former President Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam. The book contains inspirational quotes from the former President who always urged the youth of the country to dream big and achieve big for the country. The book was co-authored by Sabi Mathew and Jubi John.

October 29th – World Stroke Day  
October 29th was observed as the World Stroke Day all over the world. The theme of the day for 2017 was “What is your reason for preventing stroke?”. On this day, several organizations around the world conduct events emphasizing the education, testing, and initiatives to improve the damaging effects of strokes all over the world. The World Stroke Organisation organizes various events on this day all over the world.

Mithali Raj and Virat Kohli Top ICC Ranking   
India captain Mithali Raj moved up one place to occupy the number one spot in the latest ICC ODI rankings for batswomen. Ellyse Perry of Australia and Amy Satterthwaite of New Zealand also jumped one place each to be at second and third spots. Mithali has 753 points. Also, the Indian captain, Virat Kohli returned to the top of the ICC ODI rankings for batsmen after logging career-high rating points, going past the iconic Sachin Tendulkar in the process. The 28-year-old Delhi batsman has reached 889 points, which is the best ever by an India batsman. The previous highest points tally of 887 was managed by Sachin Tendulkar in 1998. The list for bowlers continues to be led by Pakistan pace bowler Hasan Ali while India fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah has reached a career-best third.

Roger Federer wins 8th Basel Open title, the 95th in his career     

Roger Federer won his eighth Basel title, after defeating Juan Martin del Potro, 6-7(5), 6-4, 6-3 to clinch his ATP World Tour-leading seventh title of the year. It was Federer's first success against the Argentine in a Basel final after the South American beat him in both 2012 and 2013. Federer moved ahead of Ivan Lendl into standalone second place on the Open Era titles list, only trailing Jimmy Connors, who owns 109 trophies. He now owns eight or more trophies at three different events: Halle (9), Wimbledon (8) and Basel (8).

Indian Junior Hockey team wins bronze medal in Sultan Johar Cup     

Indian Junior Men’s Hockey team beat hosts Malaysia 4-0 in the Bronze medal match of the 7th Sultan of Johor Cup 2017 at the Taman Daya Hockey Stadium, in Malaysia. Goals from Vishal Antil (15’, 25’), Vivek Prasad (11’) and Shilan and Lakra (21’) were enough for India to finish their tournament with the Bronze medal.

N.J.Gangte appointed India’s next High Commissioner to Zambia         

N.J.Gangte has been appointed as the next High Commissioner of India to the Republic of Zambia. He is presently the Joint Secretary in the Ministry of External Affairs. He is expected to take up his assignment shortly. Lusaka is the Capital of the Republic of Zambia. Edgar Lungu is the president of the Republic of Zambia.

Sharmila Tagore Gets Life Time Achievement Award       
Veteran actor Sharmila Tagore has received the Lifetime Achievement Award. The 72-year-old actor was bestowed with the recognition by the PHD Chamber of Commerce and Industry in New Delhi for her contribution in the field of cinema. Minister of State for Prime Minister's Office Jitendra Singh and Delhi BJP chief Manoj Tiwari presented the award to Tagore. The celebrated actor debuted in movies with legendary director Satyajit Ray's Bengali film Apur Sansar in 1959. Her breakout role in Hindi cinema was Shakti Samanta's 1964 film Kashmir Ki Kali. She received the National Award for Best Actress for the film. The actor also received National Award for Best Supporting Actress for 2003 Bengali film, Abar Aranye.

Karnataka Signs MoU with Microsoft  

The Karnataka Government announced the signing of a MoU with Microsoft Corporation India Private Limited with an intention to empower smallholder farmers with technology-oriented solutions that will help them increase income. The MoU will experiment with Karnataka Agricultural Price Commission and Department of Agriculture to help improve price forecasting practices to benefit farmers.

UP Declares Vrindavan and Barsana as Sacred Sites       

The Uttar Pradesh government issued an order notifying Vrindavan and Barsana towns in Mathura district as “pavitra teerth sthals (sacred pilgrimage sites)”. No meat and liquor shops will be allowed in these towns anymore. Principal Secretary (Religious Affairs) Avinish Kumar Awasthi instructed to prohibit meat and liquor shops in these notified areas. Vrindavan and Barsana are the first two places to be notified as teerth sthal in government records.

Union Cabinet approves Rs. 7000 cr for construction of 6 IITs    

The Union Cabinet has approved over Rs 7,000 crore for construction of permanent campuses of six new Indian Institute of Technology (IITs) across the country. Each of the permanent campuses to be established at Tirupati (Andhra Pradesh), Palakkad (Kerala), Dharwad (Karnataka), Jammu (Jammu and Kashmir), Bhilai (Chhattisgarh) and Goa will have a facility for housing 1,200 students from the academic year 2020-2021. Currently, these institutions are functioning from temporary campuses with a total strength of 1,530 students. IIT Kharagpur was the first in India to be established in 1951.

External Affairs Ministry launches “#Ask the Spokesperson” initiative

To enable the public to understand the foreign policies better, the External Affairs Ministry of the Central Govt has launched a new initiative “#Ask the spokesperson”. This was inaugurated on the 27th October 2017. The Ministry invites questions from the public on foreign affairs and foreign policies and select questions will be answered by the spokesperson of the External Affairs Ministry.

World’s First Hydrogen Trams begins service in China
The world’s first hybrid electric tram powered by hydrogen fuel cells has started running in China, marking a big step in the application of green energy in public transport. The tram was put into commercial operation for the first time in Tangshan, north China’s Hebei Province. With water being its only emission, the tram emits no pollutants. No nitrogen oxides will be produced as the temperature of the reaction inside hydrogen fuel cells is controlled under 100 degrees Celsius. The tram, having three carriages with 66 seats, can run for 40 kilometres at a maximum speed of 70 kilometres per hour after being refilled with 12 kilograms of hydrogen.

Catalonia declares Independence from Spain    
On 27th October 2017, Catalonia declared its independence from Spain, after the lawmakers in the region decided to do so. The parliament of Catalonia decided to so by a secret ballot taken on that day. Subsequently, the Spanish Government decided to dismiss the Catalonian Government and take control of the administration from Madrid. The top officials of the police in Catalonia also were suspended by the Spanish Government.

First ever Insurance Policy for persons already diagnosed with Cancer launched
Chennai based Star Health Insurance Co Ltd has launched the first-ever policy for persons diagnosed with Cancer in the country. It is called the “Star Cancer Gold”. The policy covers the risk of recurrence, the risk of spreading and the second occurrence of malignancy. There is two sum assured Rs 3 and Rs 5 Lacs.

Virat Kohli becomes fastest to reach 9000 ODI Runs   
Virat Kohli became the sixth Indian to complete 9000 ODI runs during the third game against New Zealand. He went on to score his 32nd ODI century off 96 balls. Mahendra Singh Dhoni had reached the milestone in 2016 while other Indians who have done so are Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid, Sourav Ganguly and Mohammad Azharuddin. Overall, Kohli, who played his 202nd match and 194th innings have become the 19th batsman to breach the 9000-run mark, making him the fastest to get there. Kohli had recently surpassed Australian great Ricky Ponting on the list of most ODI hundreds with his 31st ton. Kohli has broken de Villiers' record of the fastest cricketer to reach the milestone, with the South African batsman taking 205 innings.

Sangram Dahia wins silver in ISSF event     
Sangram Dahiya won a silver in the ISSF World Cup Final, in New Delhi. Double trap exponent Sangram clinched his first-ever senior medal in International Shooting Sports Federation tournament. He was taking part in the prestigious event for the first time. Jitu Rai and Heena Sidhu have won the gold in 10m mixed air pistol on the opening day. Amanpreet Singh clinched a bronze medal in the final of men's 50m pistol.

Kidambi Srikanth wins French Open Future Series Badminton Tournament 

Eighth-seeded Indian Kidambi Srikanth lifted the men's singles title of the French Open Superseries badminton in Paris on 28th October 2017. This is his fourth title in his fifth super series final. Srikanth beat Japan's Kenta Nishimoto 21-14, 21-13 in the final.  Srikanth had earlier won the Indonesian Open, Australian Open and Denmark Open tournaments this year.

Chandrababu Naidu receives Golden Peacock Award in London

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu has received the Golden Peacock Award under the category 'Global Leadership in Public Service and Economic Transformation' at a convention in London at 17th London Global Convention. Mr. Naidu received the award for his excellence in public service. In the 1st quarter of 2017-18, Andhra Pradesh has registered a growth rate of 11.72 percent double the country's average. The Golden Peacock Award is instituted by the Institute of Directors (IOD) of India in 1991.

Burundi becomes first nation to leave International Criminal Court

Burundi became the first nation ever to leave the International Criminal Court (ICC), set up 15 years ago to prosecute those behind the world’s worst atrocities. Burundi is the only one of three African nations to go ahead with its withdrawal after making moves last year to leave amid accusations that the court focuses too much on the continent. The ICC was established in 2002. It is based in The Hague, the Netherlands. Bujumbura is the capital of Burundi and Burundian franc is its currency.

Jeff Bezoz surpasses Bill Gates as the world’s richest person

According to Forbes magazine, Jeff Bezos surpassed Bill Gates as the richest person in the world. The fortune of Amazon's founder reached some $90.6 billion, compared with the $90.1 billion that the online edition of the magazine attributes to Gates. This is not the first time that Bezos has outpaced Gates - it previously happened in July 2017 when Amazon shares hit a historic high, though Gates took back the lead hours later. Jeff Bezos has been on the Forbes list of the richest billionaires since 1998, a year after his e-commerce giant went public.

India becomes the second largest market for smartphones in the world   

India overtook the US to become the world’s second-largest smartphone market, trailing only China, according to a new report by analyst firm Canalys. In the second quarter of 2017, India’s smartphone market recovered quickly with shipments growing 23% year-on-year in the third quarter to reach just over 40 million units. Low smartphone penetration and the explosion of LTE (long-term evolution, or 4G) are the main drivers behind this. The top five vendors Samsung Electronics, Xiaomi Inc., Vivo Electronics Corp., Oppo Electronics Corp. and Lenovo Mobile Communication Technology Ltd now account for 75% of total shipments in India. Samsung and Xiaomi accounted for almost half of the total market in Q3 2017.

Reliance Industries first Indian Company to cross Rs 6 trillion market  capitalization

Reliance Industries Ltd (RIL) became the first Indian company to cross Rs 6 trillion market capitalization after its shares surged over 75% so far this year and hit a fresh lifetime high. Currently, its market cap is at Rs 6.02 trillion. The recent rally in the stock was due to tariff hike by its telecom arm Reliance Jio which, analysts expect, will improve the company’s profitability. Jio increased its tariff by 15% for its popular 84-day plan at Rs 459, under which subscribers get 1GB 4G data at high speed per day. Mukesh Ambani is the CEO of Reliance Industries Limited.

Asia has more billionaires than the US for the first time 
For the first time, Asia has more billionaires than the US. In 2016, the combined wealth of the world’s billionaires increased 17%. The number of Asian Billionaires went up to 637, while the US had only 563.

Amanpreet Singh claims bronze medal in ISSF World Cup Final 

India's Amanpreet Singh clinched a bronze medal in his maiden appearance in an ISSF World Cup Final, in New Delhi. Jitu Rai fizzled out to finish seventh on the fourth day of competition. World Cup silver medallist Amanpreet shot 202.2 to win the bronze in the final of men's 50m pistol. Rai could manage only 123.2 to finish last in the seven- man final. This was India's first individual medal in the ongoing edition of the prestigious tournament. Jitu Rai and Heena Sidhu have won the gold in 10m mixed air pistol on an opening day.

England beats Spain to win first FIFA under 17 title

England scripted a dramatic turnaround in Kolkata to win the 2017 FIFA U17 World Cup for the very first time after a 5-2 win over European U17 champions Spain. Spain appeared to throw in the towel after letting slip a commanding lead, and their woe was compounded by further strikes from Marc Guehi and Foden to round off a comprehensive 5-2 victory. Brazil came third, with a win over last year’s runner-up Mali.

Patna Pirates clinch third Pro Kabbadi Title  

Pardeep Narwal scored incredible 24 points to steer Patna Pirates to third consecutive Pro Kabaddi title. Pardeep, who had scored 76 points in three playoffs, helped Patna come from behind and thump Gujarat Fortune grants 55-38 in the summit clash of Pro Kabaddi season 5. Gujarat’s Sachin Tawar was the only player who had managed to break through Patna defence and scored 11 points. The 20-year old raider finishes the 2017 edition as the highest raider with 369 raid points and 19 Super 10s.

Asian Development Bank signs pact with Govt of India    

The Asian Development Bank (ADB) and the Government of India signed a $65.5 million loan agreement in New Delhi to continue interventions to check coastal erosion on the Western Coast in Karnataka. The loan is the Second Tranche of a $250 million financing facility under the Sustainable Coastal Protection and Management Investment Program. The financing will be used to address the immediate coastal protection needs and for strengthening the institutional capacity of Karnataka’s Public Works, Ports, and Inland Water Transport Department.

Entrepreneurship Development Institute of India receives award from AICTE   
Entrepreneurship Development Institute of India (EDII) has received an award from All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) for supporting start-ups. The premier Institute received the award for its contribution towards promoting and mentoring technology start-ups. The award was given during the International Science Festival’s Start-up Summit 2017 at Chennai.  The AICTE awards recognize outstanding achievement by academic and research institutes of India in actively promoting and supporting innovation and start-ups in their campuses.

Saudi Arabia becomes first country to grant citizenship to a Robot
Saudi Arabia has become the first country to give a robot citizenship. The move is an attempt to promote Saudi Arabia as a place to develop artificial intelligence and, presumably, allow it to become a full citizen. The Robot is named as 'Sophia'. Sophia was confirmed as a Saudi citizen during a business event named Future Investment Initiative in Riyadh. It is historic to be the first robot in the world to be recognized with citizenship.

Qatar to introduce minimum wages for the first time amidst other labor reforms     

The tiny Gulf of Qatar, the host of the 2022 FIFA World Cup, has committed that it will introduce a minimum wage for workers in the country. The announcement came a day before a meeting of the UN’s International Labour Organisation (ILO). Other reforms to labor laws include stopping employers from preventing workers from leaving the country, a new central authority to ensure that work contracts are being adhered to and bilateral agreements with 36 countries to protect the legal rights of those who head to the Gulf for work.

Chile named Best Place to visit in 2018      
The travel guide company Lonely Planet has ranked Chile as the number one country to visit in 2018 in its Best in Travel 2018 list. The guide has published the 13th edition of its annual list of the top 10 countries every traveler should have on their bucket list for 2018. Chile was the only South American country to earn the top spot on the list.

China showcases world’s first trackless train     
On 23rd October 2017, China began the test run of the world’s first trackless train in Zuzhou city. This is the world’s first trackless train and runs on virtual tracks. It is capable of reaching a maximum speed of 70 kmph. This train is called the Autonomous Train Transit. The train is a hybrid between buses and conventional trains. It runs on virtual tracks marked by white lines and can carry up to 300 passengers at a time.

GPF rates retained at 7.8% for the quarter October to December 2017 

For the quarter October to December 2017, the Government has retained the interest rate on General Provident Fund, also called as Employees’ Provident Fund at 7.8%. This is the Provident Fund for Central Govt Employees. The rate for Public Provident Fund is also at 7.8 %

South African Indian born couple wins top US Award for AIDS Research
On 25th October 2017, South African born Indian couple Salim Abdul Karim and Quarrisha Abdul Karim were awarded the 2017 IHV Life Time Award for Public Service. The award was given by the Institute of Human Virology in Baltimore, USA. The award was presented to them by Robert Gallo, who is the person who discovered that Human Immunodeficiency (HIV) is the cause of AIDS. The Karim couple was given the award for their exceptional research in the field.

October 27- World Day for Audio Visual Heritage    

World Day for Audiovisual Heritage is observed globally on 27 October. "Discover, remember and share" is the theme of this year's celebration of the WDAH. The General Conference of UNESCO approved the commemoration of a World Day for Audiovisual Heritage in 2005 as a mechanism to raise general awareness of the need to preserve and safeguard important audiovisual material for future generations.

24th October – World Polio Day

The World Polio Day was observed on 24th October all over the world. The World Polio Day was established by the Rotary Club International. The Day is celebrated to mark the birthday of Dr. Jonas Salk who led the first team which led to the discovery of a vaccine for polio. This vaccine reduced polio in the world by almost 99%.

The Cricket Association of Puducherry (CAP) was chosen by the Committee of Administrators (CoA) as an associate member of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).  This means Puducherry will be allowed to play the Ranji Trophy in 2018.
