How to Solve Reverse Syllogism Questions for IBPS Clerk Exams

Many times, questions on reverse syllogisms are asked in IBPS Clerk Exam for which many of the candidates are not prepared for. This time, especially, Reverse Syllogism is said to be an important topic from which questions are expected in the IBPS Clerk 2017 Exam. Reverse Syllogism questions ask you to find the set of statements which are suitable for the given set of conclusions. Though they may seem difficult and tricky, they can be solved easily with the help of a few tricks.

In this post of reverse syllogisms, we will discuss an example and discuss the approach that we must take towards reverse syllogism questions.

Example of Reverse Syllogism Questions 

Direction: In each of these reverse syllogism questions, two conclusions have been given followed by 5 sets of possible statements. You have to take the given conclusions to be true even if they seem to be at variance with the commonly known facts and then decide for the given conclusions logically follows from the which of the given statements disregarding commonly known facts.

Question: No Toxics are Injection and some injections are Glucose - Conclusion

(a)    Statement:
All glucose are medicines.      
Some medicines are toxic. 
Some toxics are injections.
All injections are insulin.

(b)   Statement:
Some toxics are insulin.
Some insulin are medicine.
All medicines are Injections.
Some medicines are glucose.

(c)    Statement:
All toxic are insulin
Some insulin are medicines
Some medicines are injections
All medicines are glucose

(d)   Statement:
All glucose are injections
Some Injections are Medicines
All injections are Insulin.
Some insulin are toxic.

(e) Statement:
 All glucose are Injections.
Some Injections are medicine
All injections are Insulin
No insulin is toxic.


Solution to the reverse syllogism question: 

Draw the possible diagrams for the given statements and check whether the conclusions
are true or not. 

(a)  Statement:
All glucose are medicines.      
Some medicines are toxic. 
Some toxic are injection.
All injections are insulin.

Analysis: In the diagram, toxics are overlapping the circle of injections. Hence, the
statement 'a' is not the correct statement. 

(b)   Statement:
Some toxic are insulin.
Some insulin are medicine.
All medicines are Injections.
Some medicines are glucose.

Analysis: In the given diagram, the circle of toxic is overlapping the circle of injection. 

Hence, the statement 'b' is not the correct statement. 

(c)    Statement:
All toxic are insulin
Some insulin are medicines
Some medicines are injections

Hence, the statement 'c' is not the correct statement.
