BHU Appoints its First Woman Chief Proctor

The Banaras Hindu University has appointed Professor Royana Singh as its Chief Proctor. She will be the first woman to hold the post, as per an official of the 101-year-old Central University, Mrs. Singh is a professor in the Anatomy department of the Institute of Medical Sciences. She takes charge after O.N Singh resigned from the post of Chief Proctor taking “moral responsibility” for the incident of lathi charge on students who were protesting against the victim-blaming of a colleague who was molested in the campus. Mrs. Singh is also the chairman of the Women's Grievance Cell of the BHU. Girish Chandra Tripathi is the Present Vice-Chancellor of BHU. The Founder of BHU is Madan Mohan Malaviya.

Union Cabinet approves pact with Belarus

On the 27th Sept 2017, the Union Cabinet approved the MOU with Belarus in the oil and gas sector and the Bilateral Investment Treaty. Under the MOU, both the countries will work towards cooperation in the areas of upstream and downstream activities, capacity building, technology transfer, enhanced oil recovery and development of mature oil fields in India. It will enhance the trade and cooperation in the oil and gas sector between the two countries. The MOU will be operational for three years from the date of signing.

Maharashtra signs MOU with South Korea for infrastructure projects  

The state of Maharashtra has signed an MOU with the Republic of South Korea for infrastructure projects. This was done on the 26th Sept 2017. This was announced by the Maharashtra Chief Minister who is on a visit to South Korea. The MOU would help with implementation strategy, legal systems, policies, technological information in the infrastructure sector. Seoul is the capital of South Korea and the national currency is the South Korean Won.

Russia, US Partner to Build 1st Ever Space Station Near Moon

Russian and US space agencies, Roscosmos and NASA, have agreed to jointly build a "deep space gateway", the first-ever astronaut-tended space station around the Moon. The gateway would help prepare for manned missions to deep space destinations including Mars. NASA and Roscosmos are two of the major partners in the $100-billion Earth-orbiting International Space Station (ISS). Following in the footsteps of the International Space Station, the moon ship would be open to astronauts and cosmonauts from around the world. Robert M. Lightfoot Jr. is NASA Acting Administrator. NASA was established in 1958. NASA stands for National Aeronautics and Space Administration.

ICICI Bank Launches ‘Cashback’ Home Loans

India’s largest private sector Bank, ICICI Bank announced a new home loan scheme that offers borrowers the benefit of 1% cashback on every EMI, for the entire tenure of the loan. The offer will be valid for home loans with a minimum tenure of 15 years and a maximum tenure of 30 years. Customers can choose to adjust the cashback against principal outstanding of their home loan. The cashback will start to accrue from the first EMI itself. It will first get credited to the customer after completion of the 36th EMI. The CEO of ICICI Bank is Chanda Kochhar. The Head office of ICICI is in Mumbai.

ADB to Increase Annual Lending to India to $4 billion

The Asian Development Bank will increase its annual lending to India to a maximum of $4 billion between 2018 and 2022 to help fasten inclusive economic transformation towards upper middle-income status. The proposal was endorsed at new ADB Country Partnership Strategy for 2018- 2022. The new lending programme, which includes private sector operations, is much higher than the average $2.65 billion a year in loans extended during 2012 and 2016. ADB headquarters in Manila, Philippines. Takehiko Nakao is the President of ADB.

World Maritime Day: 28 September

The World Maritime Day is celebrated across the world on 28 September. The theme for 2017 World Maritime Day is ‘Connecting Ships, Ports and People’. The idea behind introducing the theme is to provide an opportunity to focus on the many diverse actors involved in the shipping and logistics areas. It aims to do so by focusing on helping International Maritime Organization (IMO) member states to develop and implement maritime strategies to invest in a joined-up, interagency approach. In 1948, an international conference in Geneva adopted a convention formally establishing IMO. The body was originally named Inter-Governmental Maritime Consultative Organization (IMCO) but the name was changed in 1982 to IMO.

World’s tallest Bamboo idol of Maa Durga built in Assam

On the 26th Sept 2017, over 100 artists built a 100 feet tall Bamboo idol of Maa Durga in Guwahati. This is said to be the tallest Bamboo idol in the world. It aims to enter the Guinness Book of World Records in this category. About 5000 bamboo pieces have gone into making the idol, which is being used in the Durga Puja festival now being celebrated. The idol has been created by art director Nuruddin Ahmed and his team of 40 artists. They have been working on this idol from 1st August 2017.

Manik Bhide has been chosen for Bhimsen Joshi Award

Classical vocal singer Manik Bhide has been chosen for this year’s Bhimsen Joshi award. This was announced by the Maharashtra Government on the 26th Sept 2017. She was selected for the award for her contribution to classical music. It is the highest award in the category of performing arts given by the State Govt. and consists of a cash prize of Rs 5 Lacs.



India to host South Asian Boxing Championship in Guwahati

India will host the South Asian Boxing Championship for the first time in Guwahati from December 6 to 10. Boxing Federation of India (BFI) after its executive committee meeting, stated that the country will also host the ‘India International Open tournament’ in New Delhi in the third week of January. RK Sacheti has been unanimously elected as the new Executive Director of the federation. For the first time, it will initiate a grading system as well on the lines of AIBA’s star rating qualifications for coaches, referee judges. Guwahati is the largest city of Assam and Northeastern India. LGB International Airport -Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport, also known as Guwahati International Airport and formerly as 'Borjhar Airport' also situated in Guwahati.
