Jaitley launches HAL designed light combat helicopter    

Defence Minister Arun Jaitley announced the launch of the production of Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) designed 5.8-tonne category Light Combat Helicopter (LCH) in Bengaluru on the 26th August 2017. It was cleared for procurement by the Defence Acquisition Council (DAC) a few months ago. The basic version of LCH has been cleared by the Centre for Military Airworthiness and Certification, and the DAC has accorded the approval for the procurement of 15 LCH from HAL under Indigenously Designed, Developed and Manufactured category

Prime Minister announces immediate assistance of Rs 500 cr to flood affected Bihar

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has announced immediate assistance of 500 crore rupees to flood ravaged Bihar. He held detailed review meeting with Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar over relief operations, compensation and rehabilitation work in flood affected areas. Mr. Modi said, 2 lakh rupees each will be paid to the next of kin of those who died in flood related incidents. Fifty thousand rupees each will be given to injured persons. The Prime Minister said, more assistance will be given after assessing the damage. A central team will visit Bihar to assess the damage caused by the flood.

Coastal Guard Ship “Varuna” Decommissioned

The Indian Coast Guard Ship Varuna has been decommissioned. She had served the Indian Navy for over 30 years and was part of the First Training Squadron of the Indian Navy. The decommissioning was done at the jetty of the Southern Naval Command on the 23rd August 2017


India and Qatar discuss matters of mutual interest 

India and Qatar discussed matters of mutual interest pertaining to bilateral, regional and international affairs in New Delhi on the 26th August 2017. The two sides reviewed progress on the follow up of key decisions taken during the high-level bilateral visits which have been contributing to building a mutually beneficial partnership between the two countries. The Qatari Foreign Minister Sheikh Mohamed bin Abdulrahman Al-Thani, who was in New Delhi on the two-day visit from yesterday held delegation level talks with External Affairs Minister Mrs. Sushma Swaraj. He also called on Prime Minister Narendra Modi to hand over a letter from the Emir of Qatar. He met with National Security Advisor Ajit Doval separately. The visiting Minister assured India of continued Qatari support in energy security through uninterrupted energy supplies. 

US President Donald Trump signs a memo to ban Obama-era plan of recruiting trans genders in the military

US President Donald Trump has signed a memo ordering the Pentagon to ban an Obama-era plan of recruiting transgender individuals in the military. Democrats called the move cruel and meant to hurt and humiliate American soldiers. White House released the memorandum copy in which Mr. Trump directed the Secretary of Defense, Secretary of Homeland Security with respect to the US Coast Guard, to return to the longstanding practice that was in place prior to June last year. Mr. Trump alleged that his predecessor Barack Obama dismantled the Defense Departments' established framework by permitting transgender individuals to serve openly in the military. The memorandum has requested the Pentagon to develop an implementation plan for the ban by February 21, 2018, which should be put in place on March 23, 2018.

Former Thailand PM flees the country

Facing a possible 10-year jail term, former Thai Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra fled the country ahead of a court verdict. Yingluck's whereabouts are not immediately known, but local media cited anonymous officials as saying she traveled by land to Cambodia then flew to Dubai to join her brother, Thaksin Shinawatra another exiled former premier whose government, like hers, was toppled in a military coup. Yingluck, who became Thailand's first female Prime Minister when her party swept elections in 2011, is accused of negligence in overseeing a money-losing rice subsidy program. She has denied charges as politically motivated.

HDFC Bank launches all in one POS Machine          

HDFC Bank has launched an all in one POS Machine that can be used for all types of transactions with the Bank. This was done on the 22nd August 2017. With this DigiPOS, a merchant can transact as many as 12 types of digital transactions with one POS machine.


Raghuram Rajan’s New Book   

The former Governor of Reserve Bank of India, Dr. Raghuram Rajan has written a new book “I do what I do: On Reform, Rhetoric and Resolve”. The book will be launched on the 4th Sept 2017. Besides Rajan’s commentary, the book is also expected to contain excerpts of his speeches giving the readers an idea of what it was like to be the RBI Governor.

Sindhu enters final of World Badminton Championships 

In Badminton, ace Indian shuttler PV Sindhu will be playing in the Final of World Championships 2017 in Glasgow, Scotland. Rio Olympics Silver medalist Sindhu will take on 7th seeded Japanese Nozomi Okuhara in the summit clash. Sindhu and Nozomi have faced each other 6 times so far, with each winning 3 matches. On the 26th August, in the semifinals of women's singles event, 4th seeded Sindhu thrashed her Chinese opponent Chen Yu Fei in straight games 21-13, 21-10. With this, she has assured at least a Silver medal for India. She is a two time Bronze medal winner in previous World Championship events.

London to host 2018 Table Tennis World Cup

The 2018 World Team Table Tennis Championships will be held in London from the 22nd to the 25th Feb 2018. This is the second most prestigious event in Table Tennis after the World Championships. It comprises of 12 men’s and 12 women’s teams.


Ronaldo named UEFA Player of the season 2016-17

Christian Ronaldo was named the UEFA Player of the season 2016-17. This is the third Player of the Season award for Ronaldo. Juventus goalkeeper and Captain Gianluigi Buffon was in the second place while Lionel Messi was the third.
