T R Zeliang sworn in as CM of Nagaland       

T R Zeliang has been sworn in as the new Chief Minister of Nagaland. With Mr Zeliang staking claim to hold majority support of 47 members of the Legislative Assembly, the State Governor P.B. Acharya invited the former Chief Minister to form the government. The Governor further directed TR Zeliang to prove his majority on the floor of the House on the 22nd of this month. In an order issued by Raj Bhavan, Kohima, the Governor said as Dr. Shurhozelie did not attend the emergent Assembly Session convened today, it was clear that Dr. Shurhozelie has failed to obtain the Vote of Confidence. As such, the Governor Acharya, by the Constitutional power vested in him, has dismissed the Ministry headed by Dr. Shurhozelie with immediate effect.

Nation’s Longest Bridge Opened in Orissa   

The 2.88 km long Road Bridge, the longest in the country, was dedicated to the nation by the Orissa Chief Minister, Mr Naveen Patnaik on the 19th July 2017. The bridge connects the state capital Bhubaneswar with the city of Cuttack and is constructed over the river Kathajodi. It will reduce the distance between the two cities by 12 km. The bridge has been named after Netaji Subash Chandra Bose.

UIDAI launches “mAadhar” app

The UIDAI has launched “mAadhar” app, which will allow mobile users to carry their unique identification profile on their mobile. Under this app, a user can download the Aadhar profile from his smartphone and hence does not need to carry a hard copy with him. For now, the app is available on the Android platform only and can be downloaded from the Google Play Store

US laptop ban lifted says Saudi Arabia's national carrier  

Saudi Arabia's national carrier said a US ban on laptops and tablets in the cabins of its US-bound planes had been lifted on the 19th July 2017. The kingdom's civil aviation authorities informed Saudia that the ban had been lifted after a US team inspected security measures at airports in Riyadh and Jeddah. Washington in March barred all electronic devices larger than a mobile phone in the cabins of direct flights to the United States from 10 airports in Turkey, West Asia and North Africa, only allowing them in hold luggage. 

Qatar Crisis: Arab nations no longer insist it comply with demands they tabled last month           

The four Arab nations leading a boycott of Qatar are no longer insisting, it complies with a list of 13 specific demands they tabled last month. Diplomats from Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain and Egypt told reporters at the UN that they now wanted it to accept six broad principles. These include commitments to combat terrorism and extremism and to end acts of provocation and incitement. There is no immediate comment from Qatar, which denies aiding terrorists.

US Navy tests world’s first Laser Weapons System       
United States Navy successfully tested the world’s first-ever active Laser Weapons System (LaWS). In the test, the Laws deployed aboard the USS Ponce amphibious transport ship was able to destroy a drone in flight and moving targets on the Persian Gulf. USS Ponce is the first ship in the world to be deployed with such advanced weapons system.

Australia joins India and France in the International Solar Alliance

Australia became the 35th nation to join the International Solar Alliance led by India and France, when it joined the league on the 19th July 2017. The aim of the ISA is to raise $1000 billion by the year 2030 towards promoting the generation and storage of solar power in all nations in the Alliance.

Cabinet approves sale of govt's stake in Hindustan Petroleum to ONGC    
Union Cabinet on the 19th July 2017 approved sale of government's stake in Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Ltd (HPCL) to Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC). It will fetch Rs 30,000 Cr. Highly placed sources said the Cabinet has given in-principle approval in this regard.

India’s food grain output records new high  

According to the data released by the Government, India’s food grain output has reached a record high of 273.38 million tonnes in 2016-17. This is an increase of 8.7% over the previous year. The output of rice, wheat, coarse grains and pulses all went up substantially, with pulses recording the highest increase of 37%. The increase in output is expected to increase supplies and reduce prices of these items in the near future.

Bank Nationalisation Day observed on 19th July 2017    
The 48th anniversary of the nationalisation of major banks in the country was observed on the 19th July 2017. The United Forum of Bank Unions has decided to observe the 19th July as “Save Public Sector Banks Day” every year henceforth. On this day, all members of the Forum will wear badges, distribute leaflets and hold rallies and demonstrations at all locations all over the country.

Commonwealth Youth Games: Indian Jr judokas won gold, three bronze medals

Indian junior judokas won a Gold and three bronze medals in the ongoing Commonwealth Youth Games being held in Nassau, Bahamas. Soni from Haryana won the gold medal in the below 73Kg Weight Category, after beating Nikolic Uros of Australia in the final bout, while Ashish won a bronze in the below 60Kg weight category, defeating Zain Prosser Harry of England in bronze medal bout. Antim Yadav of Madhya Pradesh won a bronze in the below 48Kg weight category, surpassing Russell Jasmine of Bahamas in Repechage bout. Manipur's Rebina Devi Chanam also won a bronze medal in the below 57Kg Weight category after getting the better of Saskia of Australia.

Kerala emerge Champions in Inter State Athletic Championships        

In the 57th Inter State Senior National Athletic Championships held in Guntur, Andhra from the 15th to the 18th July 2017, Kerala emerged as the Overall Champions, with a tally of 159 points. Tamil Nadu was placed second with 110 points, while Haryana was third at 101 points. Anu of Kerala emerged as the Woman Athlete of the meet

Francesco Totti announces retirement

Italian football legend Francesco Totti announced his retirement from the game on the 18th July 2017. The legendary player from Roma announced that he will be taking up a Director’s role at the Serie A Club. As a player, Totti played 786 matches for his club Roma and scored 307 goals. He was part of the Italian team which won the World Cup in 2006.
