Free gas connections provided to BPL households under Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana cross two-and-a-half crore mark

The free gas connections provided to BPL households under Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana crossed the two-and-a-half crore mark today. This number was reached after President Pranab Mukherjee handed over a cooking gas connection to a beneficiary at his residence, Jangipur House in West Bengal. This meets half the target of distributing five crores free LPG connections to women from poor households.

Raipur Airport ranked first in Customer Satisfaction Index Survey     
   
Raipur’s Swami Vivekananda Airport was ranked first in Customer Satisfaction Index (CSI) Survey among 49 airports in the country. It has achieved 4.84 on a five point scale index. It was followed by Udaipur (2nd), Amritsar (3rd) and Dehradun (4th) airports which have scored 4.75, 4.74 and 4.73 respectively. This is the third consecutive time in the past two years, Raipur airport has received this recognition. 

US annual defence budget seeks to advance military cooperation with India; House of Representatives imposes tougher conditions for defence funding to Pakistan

The US annual defence budget of about USD 621.5 billion for 2018 fiscal has been passed by the House of Representatives. Among other things, it seeks advancing of military cooperation with India, already a major defence partner of America. An amendment on enhancing cooperation with India was moved by Indian-American Congressman Ami Bera and was adopted by a voice vote by the House as part of the National Defense Authorization Act 2018, beginning First of October this year. The India-related amendment passed by the House requires the Secretary of Defence, in consultation with the Secretary of State, to develop a strategy for advancing defence cooperation between the United States and India. Bera said, "Cooperation between the US and India enhances American defence and ability to meet the evolving security challenges of the 21st century." The US House of Representatives also voted for three legislative amendments to impose tougher conditions for reimbursement of defence funding to Pakistan. All the three legislative amendments were adopted by a voice vote by the lower house of the Congress

Centre asks traders to register under GST regime by 30th of this month  
       
The government today asked traders to get registered under the Goods and Services Tax (GST) regime by 30th of this month. However, traders with the turnover of below 20 lakh rupees or those engaged exclusively in the supply of exempted goods or services need not register under the new tax regime which is kicked in from 1st of July. Finance Ministry has listed the benefits of getting registered under GST, saying that input tax credit can be passed on in the value chain and due taxes collected will come to the exchequer. Excise, VAT or service tax payers who have already migrated to the GSTN portal and have been issued provisional IDs need to complete the registration process by 22nd of September, by giving all the documents following which GSTIN will be issued. If anytime during the course of the financial year a business crosses  20 lakh rupees turnover threshold, it has to apply for the registration within 30 days before becoming liable for registration.

Ramakrishna Math institutions to stay out of EPFO coverage     

Institutions under the Ramakrishna Math and Ramakrishna Mission will continue to remain outside the purview of the Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) even as the Central government took a decision two years back to extend social security benefits to workers in all such charitable and religious trusts. The EPFO took a decision in May that this year they will allowing institutions run by two trusts Ramakrishna Math and Ramakrishna Mission — to remain outside its purview

No GST on sale of old jewellery by individuals  
      
The government has clarified that the sale of old jewellery by an individual to a jeweller will not attract any GST as the sale is not for furthering any business. In a statement, Finance Ministry said that the sale of old jewellery by an individual to a jeweller will not attract the provisions of GST and jeweller will not be liable to pay tax under reverse charge mechanism on such purchases. The ministry, however, said the tax will apply if an unregistered business sells gold ornaments to the registered supplier.

15 July: World Youth Skills Day

The World Youth Skills Day is observed globally on 15 July every year to raise awareness about the importance of investing in youth skills development. This day is observed to create more awareness on training and the development of skills for the youth of today and also create better employment opportunities for the youth. 2017 Theme is “Skills for All”. It aims at creating awareness that everyone should have the opportunity to discover and develop their talents. It also spreads the message of creating a more prosperous future through skills. On the occasion, United Nations along with WorldSkills.org have organised campaigns #SkillsForAll and WYSD. These campaigns aim to raise awareness about the importance of youth developing skills.

Mukesh Kumar Jain appointed MD & CEO of Oriental Bank of Commerce  
    
Mr Mukesh Kumar Jain has been appointed as the MD and CEO of Oriental Bank of Commerce for a period of three years w.e.f 15th July 2017. Mr Jain is currently the Executive Director of Punjab and Sind Bank.





Garbine Muguruza lifts the Wimbledon title; beat Venus Williams in straight sets in the Final           

In the Wimbledon Lawn Tennis Championships, Garbine Muguruza has been crowned as the new champion. In the final of Women's Singles event at All England Club in London, the 23-year-old Spaniard Muguruza defeated American Venus Williams in straight sets 7-5, 6-0. The 14th seed Muguruza lifted the coveted title in her second attempt.


Javelin thrower Sundar Singh Gurjar wins Gold at World Para-Athletics Championships in London    
    

India's javelin thrower Sundar Singh Gurjar has won a Gold medal at the World Para-Athletics Championships in London. He finished at the top of the podium with a personal best of 60.36 meters last night. Sri Lanka was second while defending champion javelin thrower from China was third.
