Supreme Court makes all preparations to go paperless

Supreme Court has made all preparations to implement an ambitious project to make the apex court paperless. The project will be implemented gradually and at the first instance, only fresh matters listed in first five courts will be accessed by the judges digitally on a interactive display device. According to the apex court registry, all high courts in the country have been provided with login IDs to upload digitized records in the prescribed format.


Madhya Pradesh sets record with plantation of over six crore saplings in a day

In Madhya Pradesh, a massive plantation campaign was undertaken today to save the environment and conservation of the Narmada river. According to official sources over six crore saplings were planted in twenty four districts of Narmada basin in just 12 hours. Arrangements were made to record the whole event for the Guinness World Record. Chief minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan launched the plantation drive at Amarkantak of Anooppur district.

Railways, NBCC ink MoU to redevelop 10 railway stations

Rail Land Development Authority (RLDA) has inked MoU with National Building Construction Corporation (NBCC) for redevelopment of 10 railway stations across the country on global standards. The identified stations to be taken up initially by NBCC, a PSU of Urban Development Ministry  for redevelopment are Tirupati, Nellore, Puducherry, Sarai Rohilla (Delhi), Madgaon, Lucknow, Gomtinagar, Kota, Thane (New) and Ernakulam.  RLDA is an arm of the Indian Railways for commercial exploitation of rail land.

Iraqi forces were battling the last few hundred jihadists in Mosul's historic centre today as they pressed the final stages of an assault to drive the Islamic State group from the city. More than eight months since the country's forces launched a gruelling operation to retake Mosul, IS has gone from fully controlling the city to holding a few neighbourhoods on its western side. Pakistan again turns down Indian request for consular access to Kulbhushan Jhadhav facing death penalty. Pakistan has again turned down the Indian request for consular access to Kulbhushan Jadhav, currently facing death penalty in that country. Jadhav was picked up by Pakistan army on alleged charges of espionage. New Delhi had requested Islamabad to grant full and early consular access to former naval officer, as the two countries exchanged lists of prisoners lodged in each others' jails. Pakistan foreign office in a statement said, it was a travesty of logic to link the case of Jadhav with civilian prisoners.

2 Indian-Americans to be honoured with Great Immigrants award

Two Indian-Americans, Adobe Chief Shantanu Narayen (54) and former US Surgeon General Vivek Murthy (39) have been chosen for prestigious Great Immigrants: The Pride of America Award 2017. They are among 38 distinguished US immigrants representing more than 30 countries of origin around the world honoured with this year’s award for their role in advancing US’s economy, society, and culture. Some the honourees include Canadian-origin social entrepreneur Jeff Skoll, PayPal cofounder of Ukrainian origin Max Levchin, Iranian-origin philanthropist and entrepreneur Hushang Ansary.

GST to boost GDP; positive for rating: Moody's

Moody's Investors Service has said, Implementation of the GST will be positive for India's rating as it will lead to higher GDP growth and increased tax revenues. In a statement today, Moody's Vice-President, Sovereign Risk Group, William Foster said, over the medium term, GST is likely to contribute to productivity gains and higher GDP growth by improving the ease of doing business, unifying the national market and enhancing India's attractiveness as a foreign investment destination. 

GSTN unveils simple excel based template

Goods and Services Network (GSTN) has unveiled a simple excel based template that will facilitate the taxpayers in preparing and filing their monthly returns with maximum ease and minimal cost. According to an official release, the template is a part of GST Council’s approach to make tax compliance convenient for taxpayers and also reduce the time of compliance to improve ease of doing business. This excel workbook template can be freely downloaded from the GST Common portal (www.gst.gov.in). It can be used by taxpayers to collate all invoice related data on a regular basis. The Excel format can be used by businesses to start maintaining their data. The template comprises of eight worksheets.

GST will widen tax net, make India Inc more competitive: CII

The GST rollout will impart major competitiveness to Indian industry, incentivise exports and help expand the tax net, the Confederation of Indian Industry has said. Implementation of the crucial tax reform gives tremendous confidence to the industry that the government will continue to facilitate investments and simplify the business environment, the industry body has said. “We have emerged...into a new era of economic reform with the introduction of the game-changing GST. This will stand as an exemplar of collaborative reform for the world on an unprecedented scale,” CII President Shobana Kamineni said.

KK Venugopal appointed as Attorney General of India

President Pranab Mukherjee has appointed senior advocate and constitutional expert K K Venugopal (86) as the new Attorney General of India. He will be 15th Attorney General of India. He succeeds Mukul Rohatgi as the country’s top law officer. Earlier, in the Morarji Desai’ government (1977-79), Venugopal had served as Additional Solicitor General of India

Germany lift maiden Confederation Cup Football title defeating Chile 1-0

Germany has lifted their maiden Confederation Cup Football title. In the final played at St Petersburg last night, the four-time World Cup winners defeated Chile by a solitary goal. Lars Stindl put Germany ahead in the first half against the run of play, and Germany then held on to the lead. Copa America winners Chile dominated ball possession from start to finish, but could not score despite getting a plethora of chances.
