Former Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar To Be Opposition's Nominee For Presidential Elections

Former Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar will be the Opposition candidate for Presidential elections against NDA's Ram Nath Kovind. The announcement in this regard was made by Congress President Sonia Gandhi after the meeting of opposition parties in New Delhi this evening. She appealed to all opposition parties to support Meira Kumar. Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad told media that all the 17 opposition parties unanimously decided to field Meira Kumar. A five-time MP,  Ms. Kumar is a former IFS Officer and daughter of Congress veteran Babu Jagjivan Ram. The meeting was attended by former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Sitaram Yechury of CPI(M), RJD Chief Lalu Prasad, Sharad Pawar of NCP, SP leader Ramgopal Yadav, BSP leader Satish Chandra Mishra, DMK leader Kanimozhi  among others.

GST To Lower Overall Tax Burden Over Time, Says RBI Governor

Reserve Bank of India governor Urjit Patel has said, the soon-to-be-implemented Goods and Services Tax (GST) will not only create a national market but will also broaden the tax base, which in turn will lower the overall taxes in the long-term. Addressing an event organized by IMC Chamber of Commerce and Industry in Mumbai,  Mr. Patel said, GST itself is a part of the digitization revolution, which along with the reforms on the information tax side in terms of the processes and operations, has the potential to broaden the tax base considerably. The governor also said GST is a precursor to a low tax regime in the country at a later stage. He also said the broadening of the tax base is an important outcome of the new uniform taxation regime and other initiatives on e-payments and digitization. He added that besides creation of a national market, GST will also reduce many inefficiencies within the states while moving goods from within a state and also across the country.

Uttarakhand Becomes Open-Defecation-Free State

Uttarakhand has become the fourth Open Defecation Free state in the country today. The Union Minister Jitendra Singh Tomar declared Uttarakhand as ODF state during Swachh Bharat Programme organized in ONGC, Dehi today. In a major initiative under the cleanliness drive, Uttarakhand has got the status as the fourth ODF state after Sikkim, Himachal Pradesh and Kerala.

New Acting Governor For Bihar

West Bengal Governor Keshari Nath Tripathi took the oath of Bihar's acting Governor today. Chief Justice of Patna High Court Rajendra Menon administered his oath of office in a simple function at Raj Bhawan in Patna. The post fell vacant following the resignation of the Ram Nath Kovind who has been made NDA Presidential candidate

Pune Municipal Corporation's Bond Listed On Bombay Stock Exchange

Union Minister for Urban Development, Housing and Urban Poverty Alleviation M Venkaiah Naidu struck the ‘Gong’ at the Bombay Stock Exchange, marking the listing of Pune Municipal Corporation bonds. This is India’s largest Municipal Bonds programme with a value of 2264 crore rupees. This is happening after over 15 years of the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation selling the bonds for the first time in 1998. Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Naidu said it has far wider implications. Capturing the significance of this event in one sentence he said the sound of the Gong is an echo of urban revival happening in our country now.

NASSCOM Sees Headwinds, Pegs IT Export Growth At 7-8%

As global headwinds continue to adversely impact business, IT industry association Nasscom has pegged a lower growth rate for IT-BPM exports for Financial Year 2017-18. It forecasts exports of $124-125 billion, a growth rate of 7-8 percent for the year, a notch lower than the 8-10 percent growth it had pegged for 2016-17. It also expects the industry to see the net hiring of 1.3-1.5 lakh during the year. Nasscom President R Chandrasekhar says increased protectionist rhetoric, Brexit, visa issues, and delayed decision-making due to macroeconomic uncertainties will serve as headwinds for the industry.

US Says China Has A Responsibility To Exert Greater Pressure On North Korea

The United States has said that China has a responsibility to exert much greater pressure on North Korea to prevent escalating tensions. US diplomatic and defence chiefs met their Chinese counterparts yesterday for security talks. They pushed China to rein in companies that allegedly deal with North Korea in violation of UN sanctions. Their meeting took place against a backdrop of high tensions on the divided Korean Peninsula. The talks also covered the South China Sea, where Beijing's island-building and construction of possible military facilities have rattled neighbours and caused tension with Washington. US President Donald Trump has been counting on China to use its economic leverage with the government of North Korean amid growing American concern over North's Korea's acceleration toward having a nuclear missile that can strike the US mainland.

UN: India To Become More Populous Than China By 2024

According to the World Population Prospectus: The Revision released by the United Nations, India with 1.3 billion inhabitants would surpass China’s population of 1.4 billion by 2024, to become the World’s populous country. Despite the drop in universal fertility rates, the UN report expects the world’s total population to hit 9.8 billion by 2050. As per the report, the world’s population is at present 7.6 billion up from 7.4 billion last year. The increase in population was spurred by the relatively high levels of fertility in developing countries. With an addition of 82 million people every year, UN expects a continuation of the upward trend in population size. At this rate, the world population is expected to reach 8.6 billion in 2030, 9.8 billion in 2050 and surpass 11.2 billion in 2100.

UN Appoints Russian Diplomat Vladimir Voronkov As Chief Of Newly Established United Nations Counter-Terrorism Centre

The UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres has appointed Russian diplomat Vladimir Voronkov to head the newly established UN Counter-Terrorism Centre (UNCCT), despite growing tensions between the US and Russia. Vladimir Voronkov has been given the rank of Under-Secretary-General. The new Under-Secretary-General would Chair the Task Force and Executive Director of the UN Counter-Terrorism Centre.
