3rd Edition Of International Yoga Day Being Celebrated Worldwide On June 21

International Yoga Day is being celebrated worldwide. From New Delhi to New York and Paris to Panama, Yoga Day celebrations are taking place as about 5,000 events are being held across 180 countries to mark the day. According to the United Nations, UN, the theme of this year is "Yoga for Health". It highlights the fact that yoga can contribute in a holistic way to achieving an equilibrium between mind and body.

Ramamani Iyengar Memorial Yoga Institute Selected For PM's Yoga Award

Ramamani Iyengar Memorial Yoga Institute, Pune has been selected as the first recipient of the Prime Minister's Award for outstanding contribution to promotion and development of Yoga. The Memorial has worked to spread Yoga, internationally, over a period of four decades. The Institute has published books on Yoga and these have been translated into multiple languages. There are thousands of Iyengar Yoga teachers popularising and propagating yoga across the world. 

Govt. Notifies Sections In GST Act

The government has notified sections in the GST Act dealing with mandatory registration of current indirect taxpayers in the new regime. As many as 18 sections relating to registration of current central excise, service tax and VAT payers with the GST-Network (GSTN) as well as transitional provisions were notified. 

GST To Be Launched At Midnight Of 30th June In A Mega Function In Central Hall Of Parliament

Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley has said, Goods and Services Tax (GST) will be officially launched on midnight of 30th June. Briefing media in New Delhi, Mr Jaitley said, the launch function will be held exactly at midnight in the Central Hall of Parliament. He said President, Prime Minister, Vice-President, Chief Ministers, and Opposition leaders will be part of the event. "Late on the 30th of June, a program will be organised in the Central Hall of Parliament where all Member of Parliaments, all members of the GST Council and Chief Ministers and officials who have assisted in this whole process, also the chairpersons of the empowered committee at various points of time, all have been invited. When the switch over takes place in the presence of the President, who has kindly agreed to be present, the Vice-President, the Speaker Lok Sabha, the Prime Minister will all be there. Two former Prime Minister's will also be on stage, Dr. Manmohan Singh and H.D Devegowda."

Retd. Justice Karnan Arrested In Coimbatore For Contempt Of Supreme Court

Former Calcutta High Court judge C S Karnan was today arrested in Coimbatore by the Kolkata Police team. For the last three days, Justice Karnan was staying in a private lodge near Kalpakkam University, Coimbatore. Kolkata police tapped his phone number at 6.00 p.m. today and arrested him. He was sent to Mumbai and then to Kolkata. Supreme Court sentenced Justice Karnan to six months jail for contempt of court on  9th of last month, when he was a serving judge of the Calcutta High Court. Karnan retired from service on June 12th. He became the first high court judge to have retired as a fugitive.

President Accepts Resignation Of Ram Nath Kovind As Governor Of Bihar Following His Nomination As NDA's Presidential Candidate

Bihar Governor Ram Nath Kovind has resigned from his post. A communique issued by the Rashtrapati Bhavan said today that President Pranab Mukherjee has accepted the resignation of Mr. Kovind. The resignation follows his nomination as the ruling NDA's presidential candidate. The President has appointed Governor of West Bengal Keshari Nath Tripathi to discharge the functions of the Governor of Bihar, in addition to his own duties, until regular arrangements for the office of the Governor of Bihar is made. The presidential election, if required, will be held on July 17th. Mr. Mukherjee completes his five-year term on July 24th.

Mumbai’s Taj Mahal Palace Hotel Acquires ‘Image Trademark’

Mumbai’s Taj Mahal Palace hotel has acquired an ‘image trademark‘ under the Trademark Act of 1999, making it is the first building in the country to acquire intellectual property rights protection for its architectural design. Henceforth, the image of Taj Mahal Palace hotel’s dome and exterior can be used only with the consent of Taj Hotels Palaces Resorts Safaris. The hotel which was opened on December 16, 1903, has a distinctive red-tiled Florentine Gothic dome and sits 240 feet above the street level. The dome for a long time has been used by the Indian Navy as a `triangulation point’ which guides its vessels to the harbour. The architects of the dome have modeled it on the dome of the Victoria Terminus (now Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus).

Pakistan Begins Fencing Its Border With Afghanistan

Pakistan has begun to fence its 2,400-kilometre-long, porous border with Afghanistan. Pak Army on Tuesday said the phased fencing of the entire Pakistan-Afghanistan border has commenced. It said in the first phase high infiltration-prone border areas in Bajaur, Mohmand and Khyber Agencies are being fenced. In the second phase, fencing of remaining border areas including the restive Balochistan province will be executed.

Reliance Defence Inks Pact With Serbia’s Yugoimport To Manufacture Ammunition In India

Anil Ambani’s Reliance Defence Ammunition which is a subsidiary of Reliance Infrastructure has entered into a strategic partnership with Serbia’s state-run Yugoimport to manufacture ammunition in India. The joint venture is expected to target business opportunities worth Rs 20,000 crore from Indian armed forces in the next 10 years. The two companies will work jointly in the field of ammunition amongst others. Both the companies would undertake joint development of next generation ammunition to cater to the needs of the future requirements of the Indian armed forces. The proposal also involves the transfer of technology by the original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) and indigenous manufacturing in India.

ISRO To Launch Earth Observation Satellite

Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) is all set to launch earth observation satellite Cartosat-2 series weighing 712 kg and 30 nano-satellites using Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV). Out of the 30 nano-satellites, 29 will be of foreign origin and one will be of India’s. The 29 nano-satellites will be from 14 countries such as Austria, Belgium, Britain, Chile, Czech Republic, Finland, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Latvia, Lithuania, Slovakia, and the US. These 29 satellites will be launched by ISRO as part of the commercial arrangements between ISRO’s commercial arm, the Antrix Corporation Ltd with these nations.

NASA’s Kepler Telescope Finds 10 Earth-Like Planets

NASA’s Kepler Telescope has identified 10 Earth-like planets outside the solar system that are expected to host life due to their right size and temperature. This finding is a boost in the hope for life elsewhere. 

Exoplanet: It is a planet that does not orbit the Sun and instead orbits a different star, stellar remnant, or brown dwarf. It is also termed as an extrasolar planet.
