US, Australian Officials Warn Of Returning Foreign Fighters

Top US and Australian officials today warned that foreign fighters may return to Southeast Asia from the Middle East and take up arms in their own countries. Australian Defence Minister Marise Payne said, ISIS fighters may come back with battlefield skills and we need to be very aware of that. She was speaking at the start of an Australia-US ministerial summit also attended by US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, his Australian counterpart Julie Bishop and Pentagon chief Jim Mattis. Mattis said, US President Donald Trump has instructed the Pentagon to annihilate IS in a bid to prevent escaped foreign fighters from returning home as they lose ground in Iraq and Syria. The warning follows this weekend's terror attacks in London, which were claimed by the Islamic State group, and amid a jihadist threat in Philippines. Hundreds of civilians are trapped, in the Philippines, by fighting between the military and Islamist militants who have overrun the city of Marawi on the restive southern island of Mindanao.

His statement comes against the backdrop of media reports that IT firms in India were in the midst of the industry's largest retrenchment drive due to US President Donald Trump's protectionist policies. Mr Prasad said in a press conference in Kochi that 6 lakh appointments have taken place in the last three years of the Narendra Modi-led government. He claimed that retrenchment of 100-200 people had happened in the sector on performance ground. RBI Expected To Hold Rates, But Adopt Dovish Stance

The Reserve Bank of India is likely to keep interest rates unchanged in the second bi-monthly policy review scheduled for June 7. The central bank may, however, adopt a dovish tone to reflect ebbing inflation risks, according to market experts. While retail inflation fell to a low in April 2017 and the GDP growth slowed sharply in the fourth quarter of 2016-17 suggesting that the time may be opportune to cut rates the central bank may prefer to wait it out. The RBI will be watchful for data on the impact of the implementation of Goods and Services Tax (GST), trajectory of the monsoon and the effects of the house rent allowances under the 7th Central Pay Commission award before taking a call on a rate cut. The RBI last cut its repo rate or the repurchase rate (the interest rate at which it lends funds to banks to overcome short-term liquidity mismatches) from 6.50 percent to 6.25 percent in the October 2016 policy review. Since then, there have been three policy reviews, but the central bank has kept its policy rate steady.
