A Resume is a brief written account of your personal, educational and professional qualifications and work experience. Therefore, how to make resume is the most common concern a job seeker would have. Hiring managers receive an average of 70 resumes for every job that they post, making it practically impossible for them to go through each one of them. While things you MUST put on your resume are too obvious, there are certain things that are a complete put-off and a definite 'no-no'.

It is just as important to know what SHOULD NOT be included on the resume, as the things that should be. In this post, let us focus on things to avoid on your resume.
  1. Personal Pronouns - Examples: 'I solved this'. 'I did this'. 'I took charge'.
    It’s your resume. Who else would the recruiter expect other than you to have done the job? Personal pronouns not only take up space but also make your resume redundant. Avoid unnecessary pronouns to ensure that your resume is concise and easy to read.
  2. Fancy e-mail IDs - Examples: coolguy123@yahoo.com. ineedajob@gmail.com
    In this competitive world, you don’t want your e-mail address to be the reason why your resume got rejected. Your email address should include your full name. It shows professionalism and would also leave a lasting impression on the recruiter.
  3. References
    Unless and until the employer asks specifically for references you don’t need to put down references upfront. However, if the employer has requested, seek permission from those you want to put down as references and brief them about the role and industry you are applying for before mentioning them in your resume.
  4. Title & Declaration
    It is outdated. You don't see people putting down ‘Resume’ on the top. You don’t have to introduce your resume. Similarly, the declaration at the bottom is not necessary either. It’s expected that all the information you put down is authentic.
  5. Unwanted Personal Details - Examples: Religion. Marital Status. Mother’s name. Passport Number. Pan Card Number.
    Some of these are details that the HR, once you are recruited, would need. However, there is no need to provide these details on your resume. Avoid unnecessary information on your resume that tends to eat up space. 
Remember your resume is a summary of your academic and work history and is needed to secure new employment. That's the first thing a potential employer sees and screens you by. Ideally, limit your resume to one or two pages of size, highlighting only those experiences and qualifications that are most relevant to the desired position or the role that you are applying for. Include keywords and skills that can be captured via applicant tracking systems and avoid lengthy chunky paragraphs.
