No Serious Impact Of Recent Global Cyber Attack In India: Ravi Shankar


Information and Technology Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad today asserted that there is no serious impact of the recent global cyber attack in India. Speaking at a function organised by a private TV channel, Mr. Prasad said, the Government had asked its agencies to install PATCH system in March this year. He said, the cyber attacks have almost no impact in the country. Mr. Prasad said, his Ministry is strengthening cyber security systems and establishing cyber coordination centres. He said, National Informatics System (NIC) is working fine.

Over 50% Population Lives In Disaster-Prone Areas: Rajnath Singh


Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh has said, more than 50 percent population of the country lives in areas that are vulnerable to calamities like earthquakes, floods, cyclones, droughts and tsunami. Speaking at the second meeting of the National platform for Disaster risk reduction in New Delhi today, Mr. Singh said, India has robust institutional mechanisms in place to deal with natural calamities and compliance to disaster management codes is crucial. The Minister said, the national platform was set up so that it can work effectively for disaster risk mitigation along with various stakeholders. Mr. Singh said, India has become the first country to prepare a livestock disaster management plan for the safety of livestock during a disaster.

Public Affairs Index 2017 (PAI-2017)

Kerala and Tamil Nadu have secured first and second rankings for the second consecutive year in public affairs index (PAI) released by the Public Affairs Centre (PAC), Bengaluru. Gujarat has been ranked third followed by Karnataka and Maharashtra at the fourth and fifth position respectively in governance indicators. The last four positions among the large states are occupied by Bihar (18th), Jharkhand (17th), Odisha (16th) and Assam (15th). 

Railways To Install CCTV Surveillance System Under Nirbhaya Fund

Indian Railways will install 19,000 high definition CCTV cameras at over 983 stations across the country under the Nirbhaya Fund at an approved cost of Rs 500 crore in order to ensure round-the-clock security to passengers including women. The cameras will be installed at platforms and waiting areas. The CCTV footages would be monitored by trained RPF personnel and the concerned station master will also be given access to the CCTV camera footage.

World Bank’s Power Accessibility List: India Jumps 73 Spots To Be Ranked 26th

India has jumped 73 spots to be ranked 26th in World Bank’s electricity accessibility list. The country was ranked 99th in 2014. Out of the 18,452 villages which lacked electricity, over 13,000 has been provided access to electricity. In addition, a person applying for new electricity connection would be able to get the connection within 24 hours in areas where power infrastructure is available and in areas where there is no power infrastructure, electricity connection would be given in a week. The government’s rural electrification programme is on track for completion within the targeted 1,000 days.

RBI Issues Alert Over Ransomware, Asks Banks To Run ATMs Only After Software Updation


The Reserve Bank of India has directed banks to operate their ATMs only after updating their operating system. The instructions have been issued with a view to protect them from a malware named 'WannaCry Ransomware' impacting systems across the world. The Ransomware took down computer systems across the globe locking up critical data and demanding bitcoins as the ransom for its release. ATM machines are seen as being vulnerable since almost all of them run on Windows software. Also over 60 percent of 2.25 lakh ATMs in the country run on the outdated Windows XP operating system. Microsoft has, however, issued a statement saying that it has developed and released a special update for Windows XP although this particular version of its operating system is no longer serviced by the company. ATM operators, however, say that there is no threat to customer data on the money. In India, 102 computer systems of the Andhra Pradesh police were hacked on Saturday and a Nissan Renault plant production was halted because of the malware. The IT ministry has reached out to key stakeholders like RBI, National Payments Corporation of India, NIC and UIDAI to advise them to protect their systems against the ransomware to ensure that the digital payments ecosystem in the country is protected. The Ministry has also instructed cyber security unit CERT-In to gather information about this new threat.

India’s April Exports Grow 19.8%

The country's exports grew 19.8% in April this year. Exports rose amid robust performance of the petroleum, textiles, engineering goods and gems and jewelery sectors. According to commerce ministry data, imports shot up 49%, to 37.9 billion dollars in April. Consequently, the trade deficit widened to 13.2 billion dollars during the month under review, from 4.8 billion dollars a year ago. Gold imports rose 3-fold, to 3.9 billion dollars in April, from 1.2 billion dollars in the same month last year.

Indian Coir Sector Registers Record Growth Last Financial Year

The export of Coir and Coir products from the country has touched an all time high of 2282 crore rupees by value and 9.57 metric tons in quantity during 2016-17. This was stated by Union Minister for Micro Small and Micro Medium Enterprises Giriraj Singh in Kochi yesterday. He said, this represents an increase by 27 percent over value and 20 percent over quantity comparing to the previous year. Mr. Singh said the Coir Board is going ahead with a project to fabricate a versatile spinning machine capable of producing yarn with a uniform thickness in large quantity. 

New Prime Minister Of France Announced


In France, President Emmanuel Macron has chosen centre-right mayor Edouard Philippe as the new Prime Minister. 46-year-old Philippe is not from the President's new centrist party but from the centre-right Republicans. The choice is seen as an attempt to draw in key figures from both the right and left of French politics. The announcement forms part of a busy first day for the President.


Rafael Nadal Wins Madrid Open Title

Rafael Nadal beat Dominic Thiem to clinch his fifth Madrid Open title. With this victory, he has won three straight titles after Barcelona Open and Monte Carlo Masters victories. Nadal will also move into the world’s top four replacing 18-time Grand Slam champion Roger Federer in the new rankings. Nadal has won his 30th ATP World Tour Masters 1000 title tying the all-time record with Serbia’s Novak Djokovic. 

The Madrid Open is a men’s and women’s professional tennis tournament held every year in early May in Madrid, Spain. The tournament is classified as an ATP World Tour Masters 1000 event on the Association of Tennis Professionals tour.

Lewis Hamilton Wins Spanish Grand Prix

Lewis Hamilton has won the Spanish Grand Prix from pole position in the Formula One championship. This is Hamilton’s 55th career win and second win of the season. Mercedes’s Hamilton finished 3.4 seconds ahead of Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel. Third position was occupied by Australian Daniel Ricciardo. 

Spanish Grand Prix is a Formula One motor race which is one of the oldest of its kind in the world. The event which celebrated its centenary in 2013 is currently held at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya in Barcelona. The race has become a part of the Formula One World Championship since 1968 and is held at various venues.

Arjun Maini Becomes First Indian To Win A GP3 Race


The 19-year-old Motorsports’ Indian driver Arjun Maini, who drives for Jenzer Motorsport, has become the first Indian to win a GP3 Series (a feeder series to GP2) race at the Circuit de Catalunya in Barcelona. Arjun Maini is supported by JK Racing and TVS. This victory has moved Arjun Maini into third place in the driver’s championship standings after the completion of the first round of the eight-round GP3 series. He has 23 points. Nirei Fukuzumi of Japan leads the championship standings with 29 points, followed by Alessio Lorandi of Italy with 25 points. This is the third instance that the Indian National Anthem was played during an F1 weekend with the first two played after Karun Chandhok’s two wins in GP2.
