India Elected As President Of UN-Habitat

India has been unanimously elected as the President of the UN-Habitat. UN-Habitat, an organ of the United Nations’ Organisation (UNO) reports to the United Nations General Assembly. UN-Habitat promotes socially and environmentally sustainable human settlements across the world. India has been elected as the President of UN-Habitat after a gap of 10 years. This is only the third time that India has been elected as the President of UN-Habitat after 2007 and 1988. The UN-Habitat was established in 1978. The Governing Council of UN-Habitat is an inter-governmental policy-making and decision-making body that aims to promote an integral and comprehensive approach to human settlements, assist the countries and regions in addressing human settlement problems and strengthen cooperation among countries over the issue of human settlement. Subsequent to the election, Union Minister of Housing & Urban Poverty Alleviation M.Venkaiah Naidu will preside over the deliberations of the Governing Council of UN-Habitat for the next two years. Accordingly, he will chair the 26th Meeting of 58 member Governing Council of UN-Habitat in Nairobi, Kenya. The theme of the meeting is “Opportunities for effective implementation of the New Urban Agenda”. He will also chair the Bureau Meeting of the Asia-Pacific Ministers' Conference on Housing and Urban Development in Nairobi. The New Urban Agenda which was adopted by the world community at Quito, Ecuador would focus on inclusive, sustainable and adequate housing for a better future and sustainable urbanization and integrated human settlements.

CRPF Command Shifted From Kolkata To Chandigarh

The strategic anti-Naxal operations command headquarters of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) has been shifted back from Kolkata to Raipur. In 2010, the central zone command headquarters was shifted from Raipur to Kolkata owing to logistics and connectivity issues. The recent decision comes at the backdrop of ambush in Sukma district that killed 37 jawans of the paramilitary force. The central zone command headquarters was raised on August 7, 2009, to carry out the deployment of troops to the States affected by Left Wing Extremism such as West Bengal, Jharkhand, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Odisha, Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh.

Times Rich List 2017: Three Out Of Four Wealthiest In Britain Are Indians

As per the Times Rich List 2017, three India-born citizens are among top 5 richest people in Britain. The 29th edition of the Sunday Times Rich List’ released the names of UK’s 1000 wealthiest people including 40 Indian-born citizens. Hinduja Brothers Srichand and Gopichand have topped the list to become the top of 134 billionaires in the country. The Hinduja brothers have an estimated asset worth a total of 16.2 billion pounds. Their investments in various industries include oil and gas, automotive, IT, energy, media, banking, property, real estate and healthcare sectors. The Mumbai-born David and Simon Reuben has been placed at the third position in this year’s list with a net estimate of approximately 14 billion pounds. The Reuben brothers made their wealth with lucrative property deals. The Reuben brothers were holding the first place in the previous editions list. The famous steel tycoon Lakshmi Mittal has jumped up seven spots in this edition’s list to reach the fourth spot this year. His net worth is estimated to be approximately 13.23 billion pounds. This year’s list features a total of 40 Indian-origin people in the rankings. The other prominent Indians in the list include Gujarati brothers Mohsin and Zuber Issa of Euro Garages at the 133rd position and Lord Swraj Paul, an NRI with an estimated fortune of 600 million pounds at 194th position.

India’s First Bio-Refinery Plant Inaugurated In Pune


Union Minister for Road Transport, Highways and Shipping Nitin Gadkari has inaugurated India’s First Integrated Bio‐refinery for Renewable Fuels & Chemicals for producing ethanol from a variety of biomass. The plant is situated at Rahu in Pune district of Maharashtra. The demonstration plant has been built by Praj industries. The inaugurated Bio‐refinery plant is capable of producing one million litres of ethanol per annum by processing a variety of biomass like rice and wheat straw, cotton stalk, bagasse, cane trash, corn cobs  & stover with superior product yields. In 2015, the Government has asked Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs) to target 10% blending of ethanol in as many states as possible.  The fuel doping programme that required blending of 5% ethanol had started in November 2012. It was notified under the Motor Spirits Act on January 2, 2013. The Government has also allowed the OMCs to procure ethanol produced from other non-food feedstocks, like cellulosic and lignocellulosic materials including petrochemical route.

Hollywood Actor Emma Watson Bags First Ever ‘Genderless’ Award


Hollywood actor Emma Watson has received the first-ever Genderless Acting Award for the Best Actor category at the MTV Movie and TV Awards. This is the first ever genderless award that doesn’t separate nominees based on their sex. The 2017 edition of the MTV Movie & TV Awards were held on May 7, 2017, in Los Angeles, California. It was the 26th edition of the awards. The MTV Movie & TV Awards is a film and television awards presented annually to winners decided online by the general public. Emma Watson is a British actress, model, and activist. She is famous for her role as Hermione Granger in the Harry Potter film series

French Election: Emmanuel Macron Elected As President Of France

Thirty-nine-year-old Emmanuel Macron has been elected as the president of France. He has become the youngest President and occupant of the Élysée Palace. He is also the first President of France outside of that country’s two traditional main parties. Macron defeated Marine Le Pen, his far-right opponent by securing about 19.3 million votes, while Ms Le Pen secured about 10.4 million. With the victory, Macron is poised to become one of Europe’s most powerful leaders. Macron has a highly promising agenda of political and economic reform for France and the European Union. Unlike his opponent Marine Le Pen, who threatened to pull out of the European Union, Macron holds a business-friendly vision of European integration. This has brought huge relief to the European Union nations who feared that France may follow Britain’s steps in exiting the EU. Emmanuel Macron was the former investment banker. He had served for two years as the French economy minister. However, he has never held elected office so far. Emmanuel Macron’s movement called ‘En Marche’ counts more than 200,000 followers.

North Korea Detains American Citizen

North Korea has said that it has detained an American citizen on suspicion of hostile acts against the state. North Korea's official news agency KCNA said Kim Hak Song worked at the Pyongyang University of Science and Technology and was detained on Saturday. Song is the fourth American citizen in North Korean custody. US State Department said in a statement that they are in touch with the Swedish Embassy in Pyongyang to try to secure the release of the American citizens

SBI Cuts Home Loan Rates

In order to give a fillip to the affordable housing segment in line with the Prime Minister's vision of providing 'housing for all' by 2022, State bank of India declared interest rate deduction in housing loan. SBI has announced an interest rate cut of up to 25 basis points for affordable housing loans under Rs 30 lakh. In a limited period offer which will be valid till 31st July, salaried woman borrowers can avail loan at an interest rate of 8.35 percent, offering a reduction of 25 basis points while for the non-salaried, the rate cut will be 20 basis points. For salaried male borrowers, the loan will be available at 8.40 percent; a rate cut of 20 basis points while for the non-salaried, the rate cut will be 15 basis points. The new rates will be effective from 9th May 2017.

Invoice Matching Mechanism In GST To Check Frauds

Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley has said the invoice matching mechanism in the Goods and Services Tax, which will be rolled out from 1st of July, will help curb fake bill frauds. In a letter to Congress Rajya Sabha member Digvijaya Singh, Mr. Jaitley said there is only one GST return with internally auto-populated returns for invoice matching and availing of input tax credit. He said it is through the invoice matching and automated return mechanism that the government can ensure eligible input tax credit is accurately transferred between the states. Mr. Singh, in his letter to the Finance Minister, had said multiple tax returns would have to be filed by businesses leading to compliance burden

BCCI Announces Squad For The Champions Trophy; Rohit Sharma And Mohammad Shami Return To Squad

BCCI has announced the 15-member squad for the ICC champions trophy 2017 to be held in England next month. Rohit Sharma declared fit is included in the team, while KL Rahul has missed out due to injury. Shikhar Dhawan, Mohammed Shami and Manish Pandey have also made a comeback in the team led by Virat Kohli. The other members of the team are MS Dhoni, Ajinkya Rahane, Yuvraj Singh, Kedar Jadhav, Hardik Pandya, R. Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja, Umesh Yadav, Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Japrit Bumrah. India, the defending champions, are in Group B with Pakistan, South Africa, and Sri Lanka. It begins the campaign against Pakistan on the 4th of June at Edgbaston.

Indian Boxer Kavinder Singh Bisht Qualifies For World Championships At The Asian Meet In Uzbekistan

Indian boxer Kavinder Singh Bisht qualified for the World Championships in the 52-kilogram category after getting a walkover against Malaysia's Salam Abdul Kasim at the Asian Championships in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, yesterday. With Bisht, India now has five boxers confirmed for the World Championships. They are i. Bronze medalists Vikas Krishan in 75 and ii. Amit Phangal in 49-kilogram weight categories and iii. Silver medallists Shiva Thapa in 60 and iv. Sumit Sangwan in 91 kilogram.
