President Gives Approval For Mental Health Care Act

President Pranab Mukherjee has given his assent to the Mental Healthcare Act, 2016. Suicide attempts by a mentally ill person will not be punishable under this new law which got the nod from the President on Friday. A person who attempts suicide shall be presumed to be suffering from mental illness at that time and will not be punished under the Indian Penal Code. The law also prohibits the use of shock therapy, without the use of muscle relaxants and anesthesia on a patient suffering from mental illness. Besides this, such patients cannot be chained in any manner. The law aims to provide mental health care and services to persons with mental illness and to protect their rights. A person with mental illness will have the right to confidentiality in respect of his mental health, mental health care, treatment and physical health care.

RBI Allows Banks To Invest In REITs And Inv Its

Banks will be allowed to invest in Real Estate Investment Trusts (REITs) and Infrastructure Investment Trusts (InvITs) by RBI. These Trusts are a structured business model for entrepreneurs and corporate to convert their capital locked in assets through the issue of units to investors. Banks which are currently allowed to invest up to 20 % of their Net Owned Funds in Equity, Mutual Funds, and Venture Capital, are allowed to invest in these Trusts within that limit. RBI will also enable faster money transfer through the National Electronic Fund Transfer (NEFT) route, by increasing the number of cycles from 12 to 23. This will speed up the transactions.

Ban On Cash Transactions Of Over Rs 2 Lacs Not Applicable For Withdrawals

The  Income Tax Department has clarified that the ban on CashTransactions off over Rs 2 lacs will not be applicable on withdrawals from Banks, Post Offices, and Cooperative Bank account.


HDFC Bank Launches Its UPI On India’s First Multi Bank Payment App Chillr

HDFC Bank announced the launch of its Unified Payment Interface (UPI) on Chillr. This will be in addition to the Bank’s Mobile App. Chillr will be allowed to link payment from 44 banks now. India’s first multi bank payment app Chillr allows users to send and receive money to and from anyone in their phonebook. It runs on the IMPS platform and is linked to different banks.

Mahavir Jayanti, the birth anniversary of 24th and last Tirthankar Bhagwan Mahavir is being celebrated across the country on 10th April 2017. Mahavir Jayanti is considered to be one of the most auspicious event for Jain people and holds a lot of importance in their religious life. Devotees of Lord Mahavir and his followers celebrate this festival by chanting prayers, offering prasad and participating in chariot processions.

Palm Sunday – 9th April 2017


Palm Sunday is being celebrated by Christians all over the world on 9th April 2017. In Tamil Nadu, special palm procession and prayers will be held in Velankanni, Tiruchirapalli, Nagercoil and Tirunelveli. Palm Sunday is the festival celebrated on the Sunday before Easter Sunday. It signifies the triumphant entry of Jesus Christ into Jerusalem. The holy week starting with Palm Sunday will end with Easter Sunday. The churches in Tamil Nadu are decked up celebrating Kurutholai Njayiru Palm Sunday today. Special prayers and holy masses in various languages like English, Tamil, Hindi and Malayalam are being held at the world famous Our Lady of Health Annai Velankanni Shrine in Tamil Nadu.

Sudharshan Patnaik Selected to Represent India

Noted sand artist from Odisha, Sudarsan Pattnaik has been selected to represent India in the 10th Moscow Sand Art Championship 2017. With a theme "The World Around us", the championship is scheduled to be held from 22nd April to 28th in  Moscow. Top sand sculptors from different parts of the world are slated to take part in this championship. In the 9th edition of the championship last year, Pattnaik had won a gold medal for his sculpture of Mahatma Gandhi on World peace. Recently, he created World's tallest sand castle at Puri beach, which was placed in Guinness Book of World Records.

Malala Yousafsai To Be The Youngest UN Messenger Of Peace


The Nobel Peace Prize winner Malala Yousafsai from Pakistan has been selected by the United Nations to be the youngest UN Messenger of Peace.


India Seal A Berth In Women's World League Semi-Final To Be Held In June This Year

India has sealed a berth in the Women's Hockey World League Semi-Final to be held in June this year. The Indian eves made the cut early this morning after they defeated Belarus  4-0 to storm into the final of World League Round 2 in West Vancouver, Canada. Skipper Rani and Gurjit Kaur scored a brace each in the game.
