CTET 2017: Theories of English Pedagogy

Teachers career
Are the monsoon rainclouds in 2017 carrying the CTET with them? There’s a fresh buzz in the air that the CTET 2017 will finally be held in July this year. Watch out for the notification in June, when you are enjoying a few pre-monsoon showers!

The English language has been a binding factor in multilingual India. The opportunities for teachers proficient in teaching in English are plentiful. Mastery of English enables a teacher to teach not just anywhere in the country, but in many parts of the world.

If you are choosing English as either Language 1 or Language 2 in the CTET 2017, then congratulations on your choice!

A quick glance at the CTET

You must know that:
  • Paper 1 of CTET is for teachers testing for classes I-V.
  • Paper 2 is for teaching in classes VI-VIII.
  • Candidates for Paper 2 must also clear Paper 1.
  • Both, Paper 1 and Paper2 of the CTET/TET offer English as either Language 1 or Language 2.
  •  If English is your Language 1, then you are testing for it as the medium of instruction; expect suitably high standards in the questions.

English Syllabus

The syllabus for English in CTET 2017 is the same whether it is language 1 or 2. It is also the same whether you are attempting Paper1 or Paper2. It is the difficulty levels that will vary.

The English paper can be divided into a) Content b) Pedagogy

Content

This section tests English comprehension, vocabulary, and grammar. 15 questions will carry 15 marks. These are essay type answers.

Pedagogy of Language

Pedagogy means the method and practice of teaching. The English Pedagogy section thus tests the methods and practices of teaching English. 15 questions will carry 15 marks here too.

The syllabus for English Pedagogy is as follows:
